I've only cooked a few times on my Performer. Quick question: any tips on how to clean the top vent? As you know it gets messy from the smoke.

Works great. Also using 0000 steel wool works.

The other option is just not to worry about it.
I don't clean them but I did use white wall cleaner one time and it cleans them right up. Wiped off with a cloth no scrubbing.

I am more of a shabby sheek kinda guy with the top vent I wouldn't want to clean any of that off
Lol Darko.
I don't bother with cleaning it. I grill 3-5 times a week. There's no point in trying
Mainly I meant the black/brown gunk under the vent.

When I'm doing a restore I have found dental floss and Greased Lightning are a good way to clean out the gunk between the top vent and the dome.
Darko - lol. Ok. I'll leave it be

My daily driver, have no plans in cleaning it. I do wipe the lid dust off time to time.

I'm gonna get myself in trouble here...
Even my 1880 vent looks like that.

If I am cleaning a vent for a total restoration, I use #0000 steel wool and finish with several buffing applications of Supra Rolite. It is a aluminum polish used in the airplane industry. Brian
@zavod44 turned me on to the stuff. It's expensive stuff but much faster than Mother's Mag Polish. If you don't do a lot of restorations, Mothers Mag Polish will work, just takes longer. If your going to cook with the kettle, I would recommend just using #0000 steel wool, with an occasional cleaning with simple green and a rag.

I guess I should have said,,,,,,any used grills I buy gets a good cleaning down to brand new condition. Who knows what they cooked in them, rat, horse meat, etc. After that, i don't worry about the vent or the lid and bowl unless it starts flaking off. If that happens, I take my wire brush and clean off the loose stuff, scrape the bowl out with a plastic putty knife and cook on. Foil under the offset side save a lot of clean up. The top vent is a badge of honor like said

(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170519/37bee47ef8f7e0d3ccd8d561fad6564e.jpg). So it's the smokey muck creeping from underneath I want to clean. It just want her to shine. Maybe I need to change my mind set and look at it as a badge of honor.

I use a very small flat blade screwdriver. As long as you keep the blade of the screwdriver flat on the porcelain, at a slight angle, you can gently scrape that crud off. Be careful to not use the sides of the blade as it can and will scratch the porcelain.
