Title: Cajun bandit door never ceases to amaze
Post by: HoosierKettle on March 18, 2017, 02:01:41 PM
Maybe it's just in my head but ever since I installed the cb door, the wsm works like I always thought it should. It's 40 degrees here and I have had all vents wide open and it's steady at 250. Before I got the door I would struggle with run away temps with all vents cracked. I bought mine second hand and latch was loose so if your stock door works good for you than don't bother but if you have an old one that struggles, get the door.  I'm doing a butt today.

Pretty awesome Hoosier. You also smoke on the kettle right? I continually struggle internally if I should try to find a CL WSM or just stick to the indirect kettle. That pork butt looks soooooo juicy.

Glad to hear the cb door was what you needed to make that work and you're enjoying it now. I'm still on the lookout for one. Looks good bud.

I injected this one. First time trying that. Also this was the best looking butt in raw form that I have cooked yet. Hopefully that will translate to better result.  Yes I still smoke on the kettles frequently.  Both are fantastic.  My preference is a 26 kettle. Best all around imo. I'll be honest, I wouldn't use a wsm without the door upgrade over any kettle.

As I've read in other posts, the CB door makes it fool proof. How much longer till that butt is ready? It's probably a 3 hour drive for me to your area.

We took a family trip to hocking hills about 7 or 8 years ago. It was in august and during one of the hundred year floods. We were in a tent. It was a long night.

That would have sucked but we gotta make the best out of the worst. Today I put a new sump pump in the basement. Woke up to water down there again. It's all good though, tomorrow is baby back rib day!

Hey guys, question is the door worthless without the $25 latch?

The door alone is $31, the latch is $25 together it is $47 if you buy as a until.

They have scratch and dent doors for $21 without the latch, can I just buy the door alone?  or is it worthless without the latch.

Post by: HoosierKettle on March 18, 2017, 06:33:52 PM
Get the latch with the door!!  They really shouldn't even make that an option.  I wouldn't bother with the door without it. The latch is so nice the way it draws the door up tight. Very good question because I forgot you could order the door without it.  They work together perfectly.

My only experience is with the old wsm latch. I have no idea if the new wsm latch is good or how well it would work with the door.  But if there is any doubt, get the latch.

It was some great stuff. Bone came out clean and it had great flavor. I didn't wrap until I pulled it to rest. I think I lost all my injection and meat was just a touch on the dry side. I used a little Carolina sauce to compensate. Next time I will wrap at 160. Also made some slaw. I never was a fan of slaw until I started making it. Now I have to have it with pulled pork.

I just checked out a new style latch on a wsm at lowes. Lol, definitely get the latch with the cb door. For such an amazing cooker, the stock door and latch are a huge pos.

Disclaimers: I use an 18.5 WSM with a CB door. I normally do not have the meat wired up with probes.

I actually find myself not using the door much at all. I prefer the lift the mid-section and lid off as a unit to tend the coals if and when needed. I added a couple SS knobs to the mid-section using the top grate bolt locations. Works great. Yes, it can get heavy when loaded up - especially if I'm using water in the pan, but never had an issue. I kind of think trapping the heat and smoke inside the mid-section and lid is possible when they are kept together, and fiddling with the coals is definitely easier when it's fully exposed.

I guess I could say: "I don't always use my WSM door, but when I do I prefer the Cajun Bandit."

I'm with ya, I don't have to fiddle with the coals much anyway. I was just think of getting one for a better seal, but then again I don't really have a problem maintaining temps, so is it worth the extra money?

My latch and door were so bad that I couldn't shut down and my remaining fuel burned up after every cook. I would also have temps spike in the 300's with top vent half, 2 lower shut, and one cracked. I tried tweaking the door, but my old latch was so loose that it didn't matter.

As soon as I replaced the door and latch, all the issues that I was having were fixed.

If your not having any problems, than probably not worth it.

I was actually surprised how well it worked. I was only guessing that the door would fix it. I took a little gamble and it paid off.

Id try it without the latch..if cost is a concern and buy the scratch n dent and save bucks.

I bought a scratch and dent it it had a few scratch on the inside of the door......umm..after my first smoke session..i dont see the surface scratches anymore.

The stock door fits oerfectly a nd offers a very snug fit..like other when i removed reinstalled my stock door handle the brass receptacle to catch sceew in the handle spun...

I figured out issue...that brass ferrule is glued in...after many smokes the glue is compromised..so reatraching handle reslts in you hitting a lot of gumk back jnto ferrule which causes screw to stop short and then you keep turning..and the glue breaks bond ...

I had a backup new stock door..removed handle and it fit and works perfectly.

Plan to fix the other door handle...soak the ferrule in degreaser...clean with tiny qtip shaped wire brush..clean bras ms ferrule insert channel in the handle and then use jb weld...

The handle and screw should then work as it should...

Try to buying the scratch n dent...while waiting filor shipping..get some jb weld as backup.

Remove the handle and keep track kf assembly of the wave waslve washer and the square nut etc..mmwrite it down as youd probably forget...

After removal...thoroughly clean out the ferrule so you clean out the ferrule screw channel which should allow you a trouble free assembly

Aside fron the few surface acratches on the inside of the door it was in excellent condition.

Still has the factory protective sticker fully intact on the outside of the door..so installed it looks factory new...im glad i went scratch n dent

Like the OP i did notice an extreme improvement on temp levels on my wsm after installing the cb door.

Temps maintained MUCH better.AND it was easier to change temps..i already bought a 22" wsm door for my future 22" wsm

The stock wsm door is definitely a design flaw/weak spot in the wsm...the thin stock door does seem to materially impact wsm performance

Btw to others considering scratch n dent...given this doir dies not hang in the door chamber like stock one...you will scratch yours eventually...i a cidentally dropped mine when leaving it to hang and it fell and offered a few surface scratches....

Their scratch n dents are a really good value...to me they seem to be returns

Id save money anf buy the scratch n dent . Approx 25 bucks shipped...you can swap your factory latch...i did with mine.
The scratch n dent i got still had factory sticker on the outside face of the door anf the inside only had a visble scratch on the inside...which im not concerned about...it disappeared after my first cook and i dont look at the inside of the door..

Btw the scratch was only a light surface scratch...couldnt even catch my fingernail on it....

Post by: HoosierKettle on April 27, 2018, 07:23:54 PM
My response was coming from a completely drunk state of mind but solid advice none the less. I will attempt a more insightful response. I have the 18.5 wsm and got the door and latch. It wasn't a perfect seal but a huge improvement over factory.  My control over temperature greatly improved and I do highly recommend the door and latch

I got my door and latch the same day I got my WSM. A quick caution, remove the door when moving the cooker. I also got the CB wheels and cylinder lock and when I was rolling it around testing the wheels the steel door chipped both sides on the bottom of where the door is. Theres two quarter size pieces of porcelain missing now. It makes sense though, the door is some heavy duty stuff. Maybe a little to heavy.

Lol it's all good on the previous response. Thanks for adding to it. I ordered mine shortly after you replied last night, with latch. I have a 22.5 and haven't fired it up yet. Got it on Wednesday, still getting things together on it to improve with suggestions from various people on here. I'm planning on firing it up this weekend provided the wind died down some.

I bought my smoker used and it included a door and latch.  How do I adjust the latch so I don't have to beat on it to open?  Is it in the instructions?

You can adjust the position of the latch on how tight it makes contact with the smoker. I can't remember if you have to remove it from the door or not to adjust. It should be fairly self explanatory if you get it clean enough. The spring tension in the latch itself is not adjustable. Just how loose or tight the door engagement to the barrel is what's adjustable

Looking at a pic it looks like you loosen nut on one side of latch bar and tighten the other to move position of latch bar if that's the issue.
