I love my copper one but it doesn't have the special grate.  I think this was right after I got it-it's got the gold ash bucket now.

is the logo painted on the lid?

has anyone else tried to paint a logo on the lid, and if so, what kind of paint was used so that the heat didn't ruin it?

The logos (except for maybe the way back in the 50's DEMO ones) are not painted on, but are part of the finish.  You can try high heat paint on a lid if there's something you really want to add to a grill, but it might turn black if you run hot fires in it.
