Is such a bad ass grill. Just saw a real one.....on the BBQ Tech video that Buckie posted. I've only ever seen the timeline picture of it.
Any idea on why the lid is different on the video compared to the timeline? Leg sockets look like it had some kind of screw to tighten the legs.

Interesting about that lid. It doesn't look like it belongs on there. Too bad we cant see the top of the lid being its supposed to be two toned. That lid on there almost looks dark brown. Those are thumbscrews that secure the legs in the sockets. The real old grills had them, but Im not sure what year they started....others on here will chime in about that.
I found this picture...I actually emailed this lady but she doesn't want to sell.....

The thumbscrews were there from the beginning, they were discontinued in 1967/68...somewhere in there...

I emailed her too Brian...I've been trying for over a year on that one. She knows what she has!
Whats the story on her ad?

It's not an ad, it's from a blog. The lady is some rich eccentric songwriter who loves goofy old things from the 50's and 60's...hence the grill. She thinks it's the centerpiece of her goofy grill collection...
Where can I see Buckies video?
Is that an original buoy kettle in the back?

These were put out in a newsletter by Weber about 10 years ago. Those Westerners are still out there,..... somewhere.

I have a few observations. Some of you may have figured them out, but I will share them anyways.
These were made for a few years 1958 being the first. Notice some have wood handles while the 58 has a metal one. The later ones also had the flat lids.
The Texas Longohorn was just a stencil put on a brown 26 and then not masked, but just sprayed white around the middle section.
The concept was that things are bigger in Texas so the 26'r was fitting and likely directed at the fans of that team. This may have been the first sports related weber grill made.
That picture from the history channel doc does have a regular brown 26 lid.
Check this out.

Looks like the video Westerner has a brown 26" lid. I didn't know they made brown ones.

Look at the red snapper in the pic, check out the heat divider next to it. Pretty cool!
Isn't that divider just a piece of foil?
I could paint Grandpa to look like a westerner...What do you think?

My thoughts exactly on the choco-westerner combo. It actually looks kind of cool that way. 8) Maybe Weber got it back without the original lid from the former owner or maybe someone was playing musical lids the night before the shoot, who knows? The Westerner was available through the 1960s and it was around 1968-69 that the 26"er lids were reshaped to the flatter lids and there have been flat lid-wood handle Westerners (as pictured). I'm curious if Weber made it into the early '70s? :-\ I also agree about the Westerner being loosely based on the Texas Longhorns logo.

Thumbscrews in the leg sockets should date back to the 1956 redesign through about 1967-68 as Brian pointed out.
