close your lid when you're done.

leave the grates gunky after cooking, clean them before cooking

oil your grates before cooking. Once your grates are well seasoned, oil your food instead.

What Troy said. I use 2 kettles frequently. One is a 2008 and one a 2010 that I bought new. I've never changed the grates and they never look rusty. I didn't change grates on the mbh or the 18" that I've got and don't plan to. I also only give my grates a scrape just before cooking. I've never cleaned thoroughly at all. 20 years and never have been sick or had any grate related complaints.

Closing the lid and vents save kettles and saves charcoal. Never understood why anyone would leave the lid off or vents open when done but I see it all the time.

When I'm cooking on my grills with rusty grates, I just heat them up, hit them with a brush, spray with PAM and let er rip

Depends on how rusty they are. Most of them can be saved but some are beyond restore .  I would just buy some SS grates and follow Troy's recommendation.
