Title: Lighting a charcoal chimney on my Genesis side burner
Post by: jswilson on October 18, 2016, 07:17:09 AM
Again, I'm still somewhat new to the charcoal game....if i have a half chimney full of coals and am using my Genesis sideburns to light them, how long do i run the sideburns?  Do I run it on high, low?

Thanks,

I use the Weber lighter cubes and they normally burn 5 minutes or so. 5 minutes on medium would be plenty to light the coals in the bottom of chimney.

I usually just do a few minutes if using gas assist.  If you're in a hurry, leave it on longer... otherwise, after the bottom coals get going (smoke & ember), the rest will get there, eventually.

I have used my side burner on my Genny to light he chimney as well.  I leave mine on about 5 minutes. Once the bottom coals are lit I turn off the burner.

I used to do this also. I have an older summit C I believe it is. The circular diverter, which is made of aluminium, melted. It now doesn't sit flat and needs to be replaced. I wouldn't leave it on there too long. Get the coals lit then remove off the burner

You can flip the little bottom grate on a Weber chimney and move coals closer to the burner.  It helps on a performer and I would imagine in this situation.
