Starting a new thread to capture some of the details and questions surrounding 26ers - past and present. This was picked up yesterday from a local seller. I will have better pics once I get it cleaned up. I would love to see various date-codes and details so we can get smart about when certain parts and pieces were used. There are a few older ones in the gallery that offer clues.

DE code - 2009. Has a taco, but not the current taco - it uses a welded strap. 8" whitewalls - so much better than the current wheels. Will look great with Koa wood handles. Not much cleanup required, but no time today. Should be a fantastic workhorse. Came with a deluxe cover and never-used baskets.

I guess I never noticed how the ash pan ring attaches to the 26 with the extra welded supports. Pretty clean solution.

Couple things I've learned about this one, and would appreciate confirmation or at least spirited discourse. The 26er was re-introduced in 2009, making this the first year for the modern era 26er. Before that, when was the earlier model discontinued? The new bolt-on taco handle was introduced in 2010, making the '09 welded handle with clip-in unique to this year. Maybe. Was this design used on any other kettle? The ash ring and bucket appear to be the same size as the 22.5, and needed the extra welded tabs inboard of the leg sockets. I believe they switched at some point to the normal leg spacing so they did not need the extra tabs. Is that right?
Both flattop 26ers are Pat Pending's. The new one is a 2015 and has a serial number.

The earliest known 26ers were the black Fleetwood (1962-99) the steer head Westerner (1963-68 ) the red Aristocrat (1964-80 and made again occasionally during the 80s-90s) and the Copper Mist Chief (1969-80). The first generation 26 was discontinued at the end of 1999. They were brought back in One Touch Gold form (black only) in 2008 (DZ code). 2010 (AD) 26ers were the last year of the welded on handle but was the start of the modern dark grey plastic handle for that size kettle. Modern Taco handle started in 2011 (AA)

If you are asking about the Mini RK's, you order the two frame legs from Weber, chop about 9inches or so out of the bottom tube of each of the frame legs, splice the pieces back together and off you go. Most have drilled holes in the 26'er to mount the bowl to the frame. Mine is a straight drop in with no holes, though I don't have it all worked out yet.
Where do you order frame legs? They aren't shown on weber site. Do you guys email them for parts not shown?

2009 DE-code. Cleaned up in no time. Little signs of use. No baked on crud for a change. Stainless grate is near perfect. Swapped out the OT blades, but the old ones were not bad. Charcoal grate was a little rusty, but it's solid. Koa-wood handles brought it back to life.

Weber's site is kind of weird. If you click on the "Replacement Parts" link, they only offer a small number of items. Instead, for any grill, click on "Parts & Support" but then choose "Schematics". On the Schematics page, click on "Search Grill Family" http://help.weber.com/schematics/#model
(http://help.weber.com/schematics/#model)
Select appropriate items from the drop down menus and you should end up with full schematic of whatever grill you choose. From there, you will usually be able to find the part #'s for every Weber part. Here's the schematic for the Ranch Kettle http://help.weber.com/schematics/#model (http://help.weber.com/schematics/#model)
Here's a list of what is needed:
QuoteI'd get all the parts from Weber in a single order as they should only hit you with a single $7 shipping charge.
Qty Part # Product Name
1 85740 Top frame for Ranch Kettle, Painted $45.43
1 85750 Bottom frame for Ranch Kettle, Painted $45.73
1 85725 Axle for Ranch Kettle 32.37" , ~$10
2 6414 Locking caster, Genesis/Performer/Ranch/Platinum ~$5-6 ea.
1 987101 Replacement hubcaps (pack of 3) <$4.00
4 87417 Aluminum tubing plug for Ranch Kettle $5 ea., $20 for 4
An optional part would be the front handle of the RK. I haven't seen anyone else put one on, but I will be as it should add needed stability to my build. I'm attempting to do a complete "drop in" solution where I won't have to drill any holes into the kettle itself. It's proving to be a bit tricky :-)
Anyways, the front handle is part #85730.
I should add that just about none of the parts above include "hardware", i.e. nuts, washers or bolts. It's your choice whether you want to get them from Weber or from the local hardware store, the latter being the best option if you want to go with stainless steel hardware.
Here are those parts:
1 87410 Hex head screw, 1/4-20 x 3 inch, black < ---- Center "pin" joining the two lower frame sections.
4 4086938 Hexhead bolt 1/4-20 x 1 3/4 inch < ----- Bolts the front handle to the frame
5 87503 Hex nut 1/4-20 inch, zinc <---- fits all the bolts.
10 87403 1/4" Flat nylon washer, black < ------ used on all the bolts
(If you don't do the front handle, then you only need 1 hex nut and 2 washers.
Lastly, when you call Weber, do some social engineering and chit chat with the CSR a bit. When you get around to having them look up parts, start with the higher priced ones first, the top and bottom frame legs. When they give you a price (which should be about what I listed, ask them if that's the best they can do. You might get lucky.
Something I left off this list the last time I posted it is the 8 nuts, bolts and washers that you need if you mount the bowl to the frame/cart.

@Bob BQ I added the ash catcher from an old performer; the type with the ash catcher bar. I don't think I tried to see if the newer version fit without some sort of adaptation, but I'd think that is possible. This one has sweeps that are stamped 26, but they are the same dimensions as the 7409 and also is a thumbscrew.

This chief was a little war-torn when I found him.
Needed new bottom vents, one tiny hole, lots of chips, the handles are barely hanging on, but even with all that he still cooks like a champ. He can stay up all night and smoke with the best of 'em!

This 2008 DZ Code 26er is a resident of England. Hopefully it will soon be in the hands of
@PB-UK. He posted pictures and a couple of questions regarding its authenticity on the Facebook site Weber Kettle Fans. Knowing how infrequently we see them for sale in the US on internet resale sights, just imagine how rare it would be to score one in the UK. Sending kettle karma "across the pond" Mark.

The front handle was changed by the seller as he wanted the tool handles.

Very nice! Hinged lid with an extra front handle and lid bale delete mod. Did you do this? and how do you like it.
I was checking out new 26" with awesome looking stock SS cooking grates. Wish it came in other colors. I am tempted to pick one up even now, but I blew the funds picking up Green MT, Blk. OTG, and Green Performer this week.
Thanks
@greenweb! Yeah, I modded it up a bit. Ordered the front handle from weber and the hinge from unknown bbq. Put ss hardware in the lidbail holes. Recently added the whitewalls from Uncle Al. I love it, one of my favorites. You definitely won't regret it if you get one.
That looks great
@1ROW. Do you use the top handle at all? I think it would look really clean with the top handle removed and the holes plugged with some black screws.
Thanks
@Neil_VT00, I actually do use it all the time. You have to lift up a little to close the hinge, takes two hands. Agree though, would look nice without it.

Hey Harris92... DGAF!!!! Hell, I just learned a new word! That's gonna be my reply to every post for the next week!!! ;D :o 8) :P :-X ;)
All joking aside! I love that grill. The spin is amazing.
That 26r had a decent amount of heat crazing on the back side and a bit of WLS. The stand was from my first kettle. A brick red OTP.
One weekend I got a wild hair and got to drillin. That bowl and lid now live on texasonions double wide SS.
The mod wasn't very practical. There was no way to add a lid bale without chopping up the tables. I didn't want to do that. Now I rock a regular otg 26r.

Here is the story of Sasquatch in Shaun's own words:
"I picked up this brown "26 bowl when I saw it on a scrap metal truck on my way home one day. Unfortunately it was missing two leg sockets, but I couldn't help myself with the challenge so I offered $10 and it was mine. The other problem was it had no lid and the scrapper had no idea where it was. It sat for about two years in my yard as I was deciding what to do with it. I toyed around with it a little here and there considering different ideas, colors etc. I even almost gave it away, but realized I really wanted to see this thing through. Finding a lid proved to be more challenging and expensive than I could have imagined. After running into several dead ends I asked my friend who owns a sheet metal business if he could help out. He referred me to a guy who did metal spinning, but believe me there's much more to metal spinning than I want to go into right now. The lid was painted with a high heat heater vent paint, and matched two-tone. Of course I also added the handle, lid holder and cool mini vent because it I think it looks better. The legs are an old chrome steel set and very rusty (just the way I like 'em). The wheels took a few patient years to hunt down. They are ridiculously heavy cast iron and have cool large hubcaps. The colors remind me of the old Weber emblem displayed on the pan. When I replaced the sockets I set them back a couple extra inches for that really old look to match the flat early fifties lid era. I fabbed the utensil pan out of stainless steel myself. I still have a couple more tweaks in the works. Anyways fter some trial and error, changes, late hours and other difficulties I bring you,

getting it done

Thanks @Travis
I never used to worry about kettle longevity but I took your advice and made a shield for the back of the 26er until I can find time to make some big baskets. I'll use the shield in the redhead too.
Old habits die hard. I'm back to using the 26 as the daily driver.
Here is a pic of the shield. Obviously I haven't swept the ashes yet but you get the idea. This was what I always did before (minus the shield and rails). Half to 3/4 chimney added to used coals from last cook. Pretty efficient for a large grill.
And a piece of poplar for leveling. Only important for the griddle.

I do a lot of legs in the summertime for the all the kiddos running around but mine never looks as tasty as yours do! Giving me something to strive for this summer. I use a homemade BBQ sauce based off a concord grape jelly mixture that I found on the web some place, it's fairly dark. I'll post it if I can find it. What are you using?

Not sure of the rules about posting from other places but this is the one I use from Patio Daddio. Delete if needed.
1 bottle (18 oz) KC Mstrpc Original BBQ sauce
1 cup Grape jelly
2 Tbsp Your favorite hot sauce.
All warmed and mixed together.
Great stuff all in all.

Thanks! I oiled, seasoned with Tony's, cooked indirect until up to temp. Then alternated between direct and indirect as I applied my homemade BBQ sauce. The kids commented that they were my best ever. I was pretty happy about that. I just tried finding the recipe I used for sauce and can't find it right now. It was the usual suspects. Ketchup, brown sugar, honey, cider vinegar, black pepper, salt, dry mustard, a dash of hot sauce, and probably some stuff I forgot. Also added my own twist with a spoon full of jalapeño purée. Just added a hint of spice but was flavorful.

This is the only pic I can find of a machine I setup for
@chuck s It's a standard One Touch '90s 26 but its wood handles aren't shown installed here. And yeah it's level but the camera angle makes it seem like it's not.
When I got it, it wobbled in front, as old 26ers do, and some added height made sense, so I replaced the legs with 1" shower curtain rods. Went a little overboard and kept them a bit long. The triangle
isn't located higher than normal (how could it be?) it's just that the grill is pretty tall now, like gut height.
That's a caster wheel on the front. A fourth, horizontal curtain rod keeps the front leg located, thereby preventing it from developing a wobble at the leg socket. This aspect is of course similar to what Weber did with the Summit Charcoal.

I disagree. Today's 26 is
a modern classic widely overlooked.
Weber took many of the best ideas about the kettle and put them all into their only 26. It's not my intention to start a debate, this is just my opinion, and I use a Performer every week.
