Title: Do you think it's safe to use?
Post by: Lemans on October 05, 2016, 09:49:54 AM
I have this old kettle with a rusty grate. Do you think I could use
Naval jelly to remove it? Of course I will give it a complete wash down
And reseasoning before using it.

I use old, decrepit ones all the time.....just scrape them down real well & tie a couple pieces of bacon in a knot so it makes a ball & swipe all the surfaces (under heat) until it's re-seasoned like cast iron.....

You can also soak in vinegar for a time, then powder w/ baking soda & scrub up....

There's also the battery trickle charger method for de-rusting grates & parts....I believe Marty did a write-up on that....

Here's one from Joel:

Marty's

Still would likely need to bacon season after the second two anyways......

If they are cheapo plated Weber grates I'd just buy new ones.
