Title: Craigslist Score, First WSM
Post by: WEBERNV on September 25, 2016, 11:48:57 AM
Picked up my first weber smokey mountain this weekend. It is a 18.5, I had been watching it on Craigslist for a week and a half or so. The seller originally posted it for $100 and then lowered his asking price to $85 a week later after i am assuming little interest. He said he only used it a few times before he purchased a offset smoker. Been sitting for a while so i cleaned her all up and ordered a new cajun bandit door for it. I am busy on vacation for the next week but now I almost can't wait to get back so I can play with my new toy!

And a new family picture!

Will post cook pictures when i have time to fire her up.

Nice pickup. Run a few whole chickens through her, to season her up. She will run hot the first few cooks. Also, that's a nice lawn. She will kill the spot where your cooking.

Had to include the gasser in the picture, it is the one that started my obsession after all. I got pretty good on the gas so i had to get a kettle to experiment with charcoal, and now I have gotten better with the kettle so I figured I needed the WSM to play with too. As far as cooking on the grass, I just set it there for the picture. We live in the middle of the desert, green grass is hard work so we won't do anything to mess it up.

Congrat's on the "find".  I really like my 18.5" WSM.  Like yours, I don't have the heat shield either.  On my wooden deck I have to use a fiberglass mat heat shield.  Good price $85.

Dang, a $100 WSM listed in our area will sell the same day, if not in a few hours. Enjoy it.

Congrats on your find. I'd like to do a test drive on a WSM before I'd decide to buy one.

@TheDude if I were to start looking which is better? The 18 or 22 WSM? Guessing you can smoke and save fuel with the 18 vs 22?

Depends on how many you cook for, on a normal basis. My 18" can handle a crowd of 10, no problem.

I finally had a chance to cook on it this weekend. I did a 9 lb pork shoulder, it took 19 hours total and i only had to load fuel once and adjust the vents a handful of times. Of course you can cook the same thing on a kettle but the WSM made life so much eaiser. If you ever come across one for a reasonable price I would pick it up, im sure you would not be disappointed.

Also, I got a cajun bandit door for it. Here is a quick pic with the door installed and my pork shoulder 12 hours in.
