I just got a Weber Performer on CL with a lid holder on the side. I am considering building a custom table and frame for it. I am debating between cutting a round hole in the table and ditching the lid holder or cutting an oval/oblong hole and utilizing the lid holder. Since I haven't used the Performer yet, I don't really know if the lid holder is worth it or not.
What do you think would be better? Round hole with no lid storage or oval/oblong with lid storage?

I think if you could figure out a way to utilize the lid bale, it would be a LOT more user friendly than any other option.
it's exponentially easier and more efficient to use than every alternative (other than lid hinge)
Agree 110% with Troy. Lid bale is worth keeping

i almost wish I had a double bale to hang the lid and cooking grate.
Also I don't know about the newer ones but there's no hook on my lid so if I don't use the bale then I'm forced to put the lid on the patio or on the tabletop.
Performer lids don't have the hook welded inside, at least not the new ones.

Sounds like you have to use the performer first and figure out if you are willing to give up form for function. Personally, I like using the lid holder but I understand if you'd rather not have a funny looking table. You can also add a lid bale to the other side for ambidextrous symmetry.
Or simply buy a lid hinge? Then lid storage is a non-issue.
I'd keep the lid bale and upgrade to the latest version that sticks out farther, letting the lid sit vertical.

Well, there is that hole in the back of the Performer frame where you can hang the grate.

This...
I always use something stock first....prior to working on any mods...80% of the time..i dont perform a mod i was thinking about bc while mods are useful...many times after using skmething stock..they tend to have novel utility

Check out the new style platinum kettle with the bale in the back. It might be the best compromise for you.
