Yes, it's that time of year again! Well, almost...October is Mod Month #2 at WKC, and this year it's going to be even crazier gooder. Time to rob your bone yard, dial up your curb alert radar, experiment like a mad-mod-man and come up with more amazing kettle kreations like only WKC can. The rules are simple. No, wait, there are no stinkin' rules. Bring it on. Show us what you got. If you posted a mod earlier in the year, show us again. Just remember to post it in this thread in October. Remember last year?
http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/mod-month-official-master-thread!/
Well, you ain't seen nothing yet!
And to get the party started, here's a simple kreation of mine that might get your juices flowin' and your motor runnin':
Thanks to three (count 'em - 3!) generous members over the past two years, and inspired by
@Jeff with his amazing Burgundy 22.5WSM, I was finally able to come up with a simple solution to the dreaded "My damn WSM 'ain't got no wheels!" affliction. Thanks to
@mike.stavlund for being the agent of a fine 18.5WSM a while back,
@Thin Blue Smoke for a spare WSM bowl section, and @dwnthehatch for the Platinum cart, I had everything I needed to make my smokin' life easier, Well, almost everything. Thanks to a local blacksmith, (the real deal) I had a pair of brackets made up from 14ga SS to match the cart mounting locations, with welded and drilled tabs to mount to the bowl. Easy-peasy. The results speak for themselves.

You might notice a couple of SS drawer knobs on the mid section, uses the same hole for the grate bracket, and is just enough to make it easier to lift the section off when needed.
And, yes, I had a couple more sets of brackets made. If anyone is interested I can sell you a pair for $40 shipped.
So that's it - start thinking, wrenching, bolting, welding and buffing. October 1st is right around the corner. The thread will close at midnight on Halloween night!
do you think those brackets will work on a 22
Here is my mod submission, thanks!!
I took a Weber Performer Silver and converted it to a WSM cart.

The height is PERFECT when the WSM is in the cart. The lid is just above the table.

Here it is in action ;D My favorite thing is the fact I can roll the cart around with ease and I have a work table for thermometers and a place to hang utensils. It's also very easy to open the door to knock around the coals if need be.

Nope - but I can get my guy to make ones that will. He would rather make multiples once he has things set up, so if enough are interested I can probably make it happen.
Leave it to
@gunner to jump the gun...ner ;) And I love that mod by the way...
No worries if you post early, but the official start is October 1. Unofficial early entries automatically become official then. (That's not officially a rule.)

Great job on the brackets. Love the WSM in the performer silver cart. Great work guys! Looking forward to October

Is that a charcoal turned gasser or is the gas just to start the charcoal like the performer?

Thanks
@Tommy B I'm 6'3", so the current height is just about right. I can reach down to the lower grate easy enough when stacked, but can load it up on the ground and lift the center section onto the bowl too. The door is at the perfect height now, and that's a consideration.
@Jeff built a 22.5 on a cart like this and it's even higher. I can always trim the legs if I feel like it, but I don't think I'll need to do that. I'll measure it this weekend and pass along the numbers so you can get a feel.
MOD MONTH STARTS TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY!
I can hear the gears turning...
Here's mine, have a couple more ideas rolling around in my head but I'm not sure if I'll have time to get to them.

FYI - the heights of the various levels are as follows:
Ground to lip of bowl section = 29"
Ground to lower grate = 37"
Ground to top grate = 45"
Overall height with lid = 58"
Looks taller in the pics than it appears in person, here's one to give it scale.

Not much of a Mod, not even close to some I've seen. I like to re-use and-repurpose things. Found a gasser out by the road and just kinda saw the stainless side tables and got em. Riveted the 2 together, cut the curve in the end and fashioned a bracket out of scraps to fit over the handle. Put a couple pieces of 2x4 underneath to stiffen it up. Used some leg sockets from a scrap kettle and legs from another scrap grill I had found. Total investment was about an hour of labor. Works great.
Thanks for letting me show off how i put scrap to use.

In my mind I always thought the Mini Ranch Kettle needed side tables, and I lucked out and found a pair of Stainless Steel folding side tables for a Primo grill.

Here's my entry for mod month, RK Side Tables. They are both 4ft long by 2ft wide and attach via SS steel brackets and pins. They attach and detach in seconds making them portable. There is no drilling of modifying the kettle as the are fixed through existing bolt holes in the cart and bowl

This is my stacker mod, currently is fully sealed, clamps down, wsm temp grommet, 2 cooking racks, a drake to raise and hold the water pan and drip tray and a charcoal basket at the bottom there, it's the first version of it and has weeded out a lot of issues. I'm currently working on the next version which will have 4 cooking racks in it, adjustable rack height and external water pan fill.

That is very cool!
Does this count as a Mod?
My Son got me this one. It was free. He knew someone that was going to throw it away. The table was cracked so I cut one out of some red oak butcher block I had that another friend had given me. I finished it with Helmsman Spar Urethane. Very waterproof and it's supposed to have good UV resistance.

The lid was caved in and when I popped it out it crazed the porcelain. I didn't want rust so I painted it with Rustoleum 500 degree High heat engine enamel because it was gloss black. Worked pretty good, but I wouldn't set the lid on a roaring fire. Rustoleum makes some higher temp stuff, but what I've tried gets soft when hot, and its not as tough as the porcelain.. The lid bail rubbed the paint where it contacts the lid. Also you have to cure it slowly getting a little hotter each time or you will bubble the finish. I learned the hard way and had to sand and redo it.

Not sure if I'd really call this a mod, but my gf's mom has a really nice sewing machine so I asked her if she could make a cover for my propane tank. She swung by and grabbed my tank and brought it back the next day like this! She can also do crazy embroidering so I'll probably have her update it with a Washington Capitals logo or something grill related. Now if I can ever use up my larger tank I can get this one filled and the ugly as larger tank out of the way!

This is a fire grate design I made several years ago. It got burned up pretty bad over time so I built a new one. I use it to recycle my charcoal, just give it a shake and all the ashes fall off the coal and into the bowl.

This is my own Kettle Pizza version from a food grade 55 gallon drum, with influence/tips from
@Antisven84 and
@CharliefromLI . It's the bottom third of the drum cut just above the bulge and flipped over. I used a fireplace gasket for a better seal and stainless steel hex nuts stabilize the stacker. There are two fist sized holes cut in the (now) top of the drum and the original kettle lid sits perfect on top. Fire bricks were used for the "floor" and a stock grate was cut to allow for quick refueling. Some donated Summit thermometers are placed at the top air transfer point, and down where the firebricks are located. The handles are replacements for the fireplace lid. After the first cook, I had to swap the bowl from the DO* OTG with the AH* OTG for a better fit with the gasket. I haven't cooked any more pizza since
@zavod44 graciously made me a set of Redheart handles, (can be seen here: http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/more-of-zavod's-magic/new/#new)

It worked very well the first few times through. Areas I will attempt to improve will be:
1. Different grate system (weight of bricks destroyed the stock grate by the 2nd cook, needs to be a bit higher)
2. A single baking/pizza stone (instead of bricks, less weight)
3. Gloss paint instead of flat (what I had on hand at the time)
4. Figure a way to line the interior of the stacker with the fire bricks
5. Test cooking a pizza on top of the stacker but under the OTG lid (two pies at one time potential, would require another stone)

Not really a mod so to speak, but something worth sharing. The little plastic leg cap on the B* code I have was shot. Since I tend to move my kettles around often, I didn't want an exposed metal leg dragging on the paver patio. The solution came from my GF in the form of a wine cork from a bottle of Cupcake Prosecco. I don't have any idea what Cupcake Prosecco is, but I was told it doesn't have anything to do with cupcakes. A cork from a beer bottle could also work, however, I don't typically keep beer corks lying around after the beer is gone. I liked this so much, I made the swap on all of my kettles. Take the plastic cap off, push the cork into the leg, done.
B* code with no leg cap on the nice pavers

I tried to get away without them, but you're right, it'll definitely help in maintaining that high temp required for pizza.
This is an ash catcher I made out of an old aluminum pot. It was attached to the kettle with some nails that went through the legs and then into the pot. One more way to turn a OTS into a OTG. Its been removed and returned to the scrap pile.

How about a stainless steel ash catcher?
This one mounts on pins that go through the leg sockets and its the easiest one to use that I'v made so far.

Check out this wood POS I made to hold my lid off the ground. You can set your lid down on it in a hurry and there's no way this thing will chip the paint or damage the lid. All I did was get a 1 3/4" wood rod and drill two holes at 45* and put some long dowels in them, then screw it all together. AND WAHLAH!

Nicely done. If you add a third leg, it would be like an easel and therefore more portable (don't need to lean it on anything).
I took the third leg off, it made it sit too far into the walkway here, but in the wild another leg is handy.

Stable enough for now, il be getting a die grinder onto the top of the tabs though to notch out a recess for the grates to sit in.
This is one of a few different designs I made to replace some rotten sweeper blades. Its one piece, made from 1/8' angle iron then ground and sanded to the profile of the kettle. When i put it together I advanced one blade 1/8" ahead of the other 2 so I have better control on lo-N-slo cooks.
