I have just picked up a new 22" Kettle. After several cooks on it I am not liking the original grate for it. Was thinking of getting either the Weber Gourmet system or Weber Hinged grate but wasn't sure. I have seen several kettles on here with some different type grates. Just wanted to hear from the pros here about their thoughts I. The different available grates for the 22. Thanks in advance for any help

I have both the gourmet and the hinged. I prefer the hinged to the gourmet. Don't like the two pieces of the gourmet. The gourmet is handy if you want to use a vortex, can access the vortex, or even cook without the center.
I have the sear grate, but in general find the gourmet inserts (including the sear grate) to be gimmicks. I know others have and like them.
I,m not a fan of the gourmet grate either /// use the hinged grate more often
The hinged works for me.

I really like the beefiness of the gourmet grate, but prefer the the hinged "style".
is there some difference with the hinges on the hinged grate versus the gourmet ? Because the gourmet that I picked up is hinged on both sides.
I like the heft and versatility of the Gormet grate.
I have the gourmet, hinge and craycorts. I use the craycorts the most. With the gourmet used when using an insert. The hinge grate is used when i am using more than one grill.
So they each have their place.

I'm going to be odd man out and say that I prefer the beefier old cooking grates (non hinged) 60s-90s version. Their just made better.

The hinged portions are about the same. I think the issue is with the insert, which must be removed in order to hang the grate vertically.
My dream grate would be built of the same SS stock as the gourmet, without the hole in the middle.
Nice thanks for the replies. I liked the way the Gourmet system looked but wondered if it was gimmicky. Kinda off topic a little bit but where do you guys buy your accessories? Was looking online trying to find some good BBQ websites that I could get some stuff from

I hit Ace Hardware, Lowes, Home Depot and anywhere they sell BBQ supplies. E-replacement is a good place to look also.
Hinged for mine, all of mine!
I have the Stok grate in my performer and love it. I wish it had hinged sides though. I use the pizza stone insert all the time.

Ah, gotcha. With my Performer, I don't have to worry about hanging the grate really. I pull the whole thing and set it on the table.
I love the Gourmet as it's heavier/sturdier and has the flip up sides. Also, the removable center comes in handy for positioning coals.
After about 3 years of use, I cleaned seasoned and stored away the Craycort. The most-used grill/grate combo is my 1981 26er with a non-hinged original grate. I have 3 SS hinged grates, (sadly no longer available from Weber) that I use on the performer and Cajun Bandit conversion and a pair of SS hinged grates for the 18.5 WSM (again, no longer available from Weber).
Weber looks like the majority just likes the Reg Weber hinged grates the best. Think I am gonna pick up the Javalin handheld thermometer, hinged grates and the Weber Charcoal Baskets for now.

@ Hell Fire Grill , nice grate. Did you make it?
hinged
I like my hinged Weber SS the best. Very easy to clean.
I have a heavy duty Happy Cooker SS grate, my favorite of 20, it's great.
Has anyone used this one? It looks interesting.
@Troy maybe?

As far as the SS hinged 18.5" and 22.5" grates not being available from weber I ordered and received mine in late July of this year. As well as the SS one touch cleaning system. Maybe they have a new batch,I just gave them the part numbers and the order was placed.

@Maxmbob Yes I did.
I want it to be the $30 Gourmet grate I bought for my $5.00 OTS but I actually use my OEM Weber hinged grate in the OTG more often. I should just tack weld the center permanently into my gourmet, it would probably become my pick then.
P/N 80730 is for the 18.5" hinged SS grate. P/N 80728 is for the 22.5" hinged SS grate. P/N 90720 is for the SS O/T cleaning system for the 22.5". Sorry about the prices can't find them in my emails with weber. Just to check I placed them side by side with brand new plated versions and they are not as shiney so yeah there is a visual difference.
Filibuster,
Thanks for the info. I called Weber CS and confirmed your part numbers and availability. Pricing for the SS O/T cleaning system is a reasonable $12.65. Nearly spilled my cornflakes when CS rep told me 18.5 SS grate is $52.90 and 22.5 SS grate is $58.47! They have them in stock but I'll pass at that price.
Glad I could help,after much thought on plated or SS I might switch all my grates to SS. What are the health risks if any when that plating starts coming off. Price be damned.
I really don't like the gourmet system grate that came on my new performer. The center falls out and the hinged parts are hard to open and close compared to my regular hinged grates. I bought a 22" stainless steel hinged grate for it on ebay a few months ago. It's made by grill care?? can't remember if that's right. It was under 40 bucks with the shipping.
Call me crazy but I've always liked the thinner grates. More surface area to get exposed for a good sear. I've never understood the whole cast iron grill mark thing. I'd rather have a nice crust over the entire surface than just on a few grill marks.
