Title: Rookie question
Post by: Rondo on June 21, 2015, 05:05:12 AM
When did they stop making red performers

I may be in the wrong place for this question. Reason I ask is that I found one for sale. A little rough but $50obo. Handle and vent came off but he still has. It's 2.5 hours away.

With a little research I found out it's a gen1 non gas assist.

I would personally hold off for one in better condition.

I second @dwnthehatch $50 is a fine price, but for not much more you can find something in better condition. And while I don't know where you're located, 2.5 hrs one way is a heck of a trip. And you'd likely be driving a truck or suv so that about doubles your money from gas. Not to mention all the grilling you could be doing in 5 hours!

That's a lot of gas and time.

I've done/paid more for a rare fish I've wanted. Plus, the road trip can be fun.

I would hold out for one with gas assist.  That's a seriously useful feature, and one I use every single time I grill or smoke.

Well I did it anyway. Paid $35 for i5 and figured if nothing else I got a nice stainless table. Turns out it's a 1993. Two problems that it has is there is a quarter size rest hole where one side of the handle rivets to. Need help figuring out what to do without compromising lid. Also needs bottom damper replaced. Other than that just cleaning. I could always just drop another kettle in it and use the table. It is not a gas assist. If I new how to post pics I would. Handle and top vent are there. What do you think?

I think you made out ok. Where are you located? Those things are rarer in certain parts of the country so I think it was still worth the trip. Just bolt on the handle with some fender washers. 8)

I'm in Granbury Texas. I have found out that they no longer make the damper for the bottom. It has kind of a boomerang looking handle on the bottom that holds the bowl. The dampers inside are rusted out. I have to be created or you have to buy a whole bowl assembly. Bout a $124 bucks.

Rondo you can convert that bowl to use the current sweep/damper parts. There may be a link in the technical reference library.

I was just looking at that. Thanks, I have a one touch and was wondering why that same bowl couldn't be modified. Got to be way cheaper and I get to keep the red

It's not the bowl that needs to be modified, it's that the new handles & sweeps don't quite fit the old ash cannisters......

See your other thread......

@Rondo..

If you have ash catcher bar ..you can mod a 7444 ash sweep to work..fun part of removing the old ash sweep...dremel with cutting wheel...or sweating with a small hack saw..good time to buy dremel or rtx black and decker clone.
sounds like you have a hole in the top lid next to handle weld.
you can use a ss nut and washer/fender washer to seal up the hole.
and congrats on joining the ss performer club.
i find the non gas assist are more rare finds.
You may find that your bottom frame cross members are about the fall out from rusted star nuts...easily repaired.

Congrats on your new Performer, i have a non gas assist Performer also.  Sounds like you have a good course of action on restoring your new grill, if you do want to switch out bowls just find a Platinum bowl and lid and swap them out.

The motto herein bespokes: "Rescue, RESTORE, Respect"  ...  That being said, @zavod44  can supply you with the "strange" shaped rusty thingy (as well as beautiful handles) that holds the as-issued ash bowl holder in place.  Several members here can help with the 7409 ash sweep assembly.  And "Bob's your uncle and Fanny's your aunt", your SS is in business.

However, you may just have the urge to "get'r done",  YMMV.    SJ

Did you snatch that SS from hillsboro? I had seen that and was gonna take a peek at it a while back. I was traveling back from Austin and construction traffic on 35 had me in a violent state of mind. I was in no mood for anything other than getting home.

...and before I catch grief for not observing RRR.. I already had a blue mastertouch in the back of my MINI. No space for a SS
