Title: Chicago area (Palatine) cook-off comp
Post by: Jeff on August 25, 2014, 09:39:31 AM
For those of you that are in the Chicago area, there will be a small cooking competition on Sunday, September 14th.  The competition will take place in Palatine and will feature ribs and or chicken.  Its 25.00 to enter and is limited to only 10 total people.  You can chose ribs and or chicken (25.00 for each one).  It will be judged by Kevin Kolman from Weber.
I'm entered for to represent for the WKC and will be making ribs.  I'll also be bringing my smoker with a few choice grills to display and promote our site a bit.

Here are couple links with the information

Thanks for the good luck wishes all.  I'll be taking some photos of course.  Will post them following the cook.

Troy, I think I'll have some sort of canopy I'll put up.  Might come in handy if its hot and sunny out.   I'm guessing a couple large tables under the canopy to prep on, with some display grills sprinkled in here and there.

So the end of a successful day is finally here.  While the competition wasn't fierce, only 5 total rib competitors...I was able to win first place!  There were a total of 4 people doing the judging for today.   I took my time today, learned some more stuff, and turned out what I thought was a pretty good turn in box.  I don't think the competition part of cooking is for me, but I'm glad I tried it once.  It's a lot of time and preparation.

Here are a few pics from the day.  So many people stopped to look at the grills I had on display, many questions if I painted them, are those real, is that yellow grill homemade?  I laughed, but a lot of people thought the display grills were super cool.  Every team that cooked ribs had 3 slabs to do, we were given baby backs.  The turn in box consisted of 8 ribs (2 per judge).  The rest was sold to people at the fest at 1.00 per sample (1 bone each).  The just over 2 slabs I had remaining were gone within 20 minutes.  Lots of positive compliments from the public.  I was hoping to have a small trophy for the win, but cash was the prize today and that's never a bad thing!

Started the day with a quick rub (on the ribs) in the morning.  Everything had to be prepared the day of.

Ribs onto the smoker.
The shadow makes one of the slabs looks like its done already!

That's awesome Jeff!  Way to push yourself to try new things, and to take first is simply icing on the cake (or glaze on the ribs in this case)!

Congrats,
