Title: Kettle Fire Pit
Post by: MacEggs on August 04, 2014, 05:06:53 AM
Recently I rescued a 22" OTG for $10.  DA on the vent.

My main reason was to salvage the parts.
Most of the parts were in decent condition, except for the ash ring .. it was busted in two.

There were a few issues with the leg sockets, but nothing too extreme.

I have been wanting to use a Weber kettle as a fire pit, but don't want it to rest on the leg sockets ... too wobbly I would think.
And, I don't want it too high.  So, I figured the best bet would be to build a stand.

This stand raises the kettle 6 inches from it resting on the leg sockets.  So, it's a little over 10" lower than the standard height for a 22" kettle.

(http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n615/MacEggs/IMG_3493.jpg) (http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/MacEggs/media/IMG_3493.jpg.html)

I don't make the prettiest welds ..  ??? :-\

(http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n615/MacEggs/IMG_3495.jpg) (http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/MacEggs/media/IMG_3495.jpg.html)

(http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n615/MacEggs/IMG_3494.jpg) (http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/MacEggs/media/IMG_3494.jpg.html)

And yeah ... the wood burns a lot better without the lid on.

The ash catcher performed as I hoped.

(http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n615/MacEggs/IMG_3498.jpg) (http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/MacEggs/media/IMG_3498.jpg.html)

Pushed the coals to the side and warmed up a homemade lasagna for about 30-40 minutes. Garlic bread on near the end.

(http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n615/MacEggs/IMG_3500.jpg) (http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/MacEggs/media/IMG_3500.jpg.html)

Was still hungry, so on went a patty.

(http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n615/MacEggs/IMG_3501.jpg) (http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/MacEggs/media/IMG_3501.jpg.html)

This was a fun project.  I may end up getting it professionally painted, as I want it to last.
I failed to use primer, and there are some issues with the header paint around where the kettle rests.

Here are the materials I used:

FLAT BAR

UPPER BAND: 2" wide, 69" long, ⅛" thick (rolled)
LOWER BAND: 3" wide, 69" long, ⅛" thick (rolled)
LEGS: ¾" wide, 16" long, ¼" thick

The bottom of the ashpan is 16 gauge sheet metal

I got the upper and lower bands rolled at a machine shop. There was no way I could do that myself.
I watched the guy do it. Probably took him less than 10 minutes, and that was cool.

Nice idea!

I like it, i would agree that a fire pit should have the lid off, all the better to see the flames! :)

I was kinda curious, too.  So, I just went and weighed it:  21 lbs.

It fit nicely in the back of my Honda Civic. Had it at my folks place in the country for the weekend. Lots of maple to burn.
Sadly, only got one burn done on it so far.  Wanted to bring it home, so we didn't fire it up on Sunday.

I would never consider that ... I posted it for sharing, so ... Get 'er done!

I picked up all the materials at Metal Supermarkets (http://metalsupermarkets.com) for under $40.
They will cut to size, and their prices are excellent.

I then did all the cutting / grinding required and the welding, as I am a master welder .... just kidding .. I suck at welding ..
But, I try to do my best.  It should hold-up for awhile.   :) :) ;) ;)

Your welds look fine to me.  I'm no welder of any sort, but an old friend owns a shop, so theres that.

What, if anything, would you have done differently?
Title: Re: Kettle Fire Pit
Post by: SixZeroFour on August 05, 2014, 07:11:55 AM
Have to agree with Stu ^

I've only used a welder a handful of times and it's not easy getting a consistent bead let alone welding down into a corner like that.

The whole rig is just sweet!

I did consider different legs.  Perhaps a tubular leg or a rod to tie-in with the kettle look.
I already had the material on hand for the legs, so I went with that, and it's strong and sturdy.

With a tubular piece, I didn't want to burn a hole thru it when it came time to weld.

Other than that, I am very happy with the measurements.

I made a replica...well, my buddy that owns a welding shop did.  I painted it this evening.  I stayed true to your plans with two minor exceptions.  Plus I painted it silver to pay homage to the Weber kettle's legs.  Using a late 80's blackie kettle.  I'll post pictures, etc tomorrow.

Thanks again for the great idea!

Took some pictures this morning.

Like I said, I got a late 80s black kettle.  A friend has a barrel smoker and wanted a domed lid, so he got that.  I'll probably use the legs on a different project, refurbishing an older cousin's grill that has been neglected.  Anyway...

I showed MacEggs' plan to an old friend that owns a welding shop.  The two minor modifications were using a 1 1/2 inch upper band (because thats what Jim had on hand), and I asked him to make the legs 17" instead of 16" and turn up one inch to create "feet" on the legs.  Otherwise, true to his plans:

Painted with Rust O Leum High Heat.  After some debate I chose silver.

Oh, I did do something else differently.  I ditched the OTS, just leaving open vents.

How cool would that be with a silver painted kettle.. I've got a DA code OTS that I swapped the lid handle to an old MLH. I may have to build one of these. I love fire pit night and my clay one from Home Depot isn't doing it for me.. ;D

Holy sh!t, Stu ... that looks outstanding!!  :D :D

I really like the feet on the legs.  Great colour and contrast with the kettle bowl.

I live in a sub-division, so I kept the OT on, and I use the lid. This allows me to shut it down easier.
I think the by-law here is no fires after 11PM, or maybe midnight.  ???

Title: The Final Outdoor Burn ...
Post by: MacEggs on October 19, 2014, 08:51:40 PM
The outdoor season is winding down in these parts.
I had some wood scraps to burn ... needed to free up some space.

I, frankly, could sit outside with a fire every night.  Mother Nature, however, sets the tone for the GWN.

It will go from this ....

(http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n615/MacEggs/Kettle%20Fire%20Pit/IMG_3536.jpg) (http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/MacEggs/media/Kettle%20Fire%20Pit/IMG_3536.jpg.html)

To this ....

My wife wanted no part in this .... It was only about 3-5℃ (40℉) .... Actually very nice in my books. No wind, either.

I decided I wanted one last "kick-at-the-can" for 2014 when it came to my fire pit.

I gathered up the wood needed for a decent fire ...
Even threw on the head of an old corn-broom donated from my neighbor.  :D

I totally missed this thread. I love the fire pit idea! The best part about it is that you can still grill on the kettle.

Cool pics, MacEggs!  The funny thing is, while the outside fire pit nights are winding down for you, its only now getting chilly enough at night here to justify a fire.

Damn cruel.  Gonna be doing my cooking in heavy coat, gloves, hat and scarf soon enough.  The cold is getting in my bones more as I get older but let that keep me from good Q???  No bloody way.

I did this last winter:

Look at the bright side, that makes for a nice wind block.

The two handles on the bowl of the pit allow me to keep my feet warm ....  8) 8)

It's 2018 .... I wanted an 18" kettle fire pit to honour the year.

Made this stand back in late February during a mild spell.  Finally got it painted and fired it up.

I tack welded some EM to the charcoal grate.  I also go with the basic ash pan below that.
No ash drops on the ground below.

It's a great set-up!  So much lighter to transport than the 22" version.

After the above pic, I roasted some wieners for a late night snack.  Delicious cooked over a fire.  8)
