I always thought that would be cool for the times when you need more headroom. I would want it to seal though.

I think the bigger deal here is the balancing act of the Smokey Mountain lid on the kettle base.   Good thing it wasn't windy out!

Kind of silly to start cleaning a lid after lighting charcoal.  In a pinch I grabbed the WSM lid which was actually pretty secure/air tight due to the residue build up.

Here's my 22 egg from '09. It's hard to believe I have been modding grills for so many years. While looking for this I ran across a few from '08. I need to post some of the later for a good laugh.

Here you can see the edge I cut out from another old 22 lid to make the 22 WSM lid fit. I was preparing to cook a standing turkey.
