What's a good smoker thermometer?
« on: April 06, 2014, 02:12:24 PM »
Can anyone advise me on what is a good, reliable, digital thermometer to use when smoking?
This is the original Weber kettle. The most powerful bbq grill in the world and can blow your taste-buds clean off! So, you have to ask yourself one question: "Do you feel hungry? Well, do you punk?"

The Maverick ET-732 and ET-733 have a lot of fans and is probably the most popular of the digitals.
Amazon had them on special a few days ago and I have one en route.

You get two probes...typically one for food temp and one for smoker temp.
This store will let you modify that and/or upgrade to US made probes.
The tethered head stays near the smoker (of course) and you can carry a wireless head and monitor temps from the comfort of your easy chair.

I use the cheapie $20 Wal-Mart special, and it works great.  Only one probe, but I just keep it in a wine-cork on the grate to monitor grill temps, then just before the meat is done I'll plop it into the center of the meat until it reaches temp.

The nice thing is I don't have to worry about it because it's so cheap, but is still very accurate.
Interested in ANY offset handle SJs you may have.

When I need a thermometer in a piece of boston butt or brisket, then I pull out my Maverick ET-732. For everyday pork rib smokes, I just simply stick the Weber thermometer that is found on the lids of the 22.5" MT kettles into the vent hole in the lid. You can buy those thermometer from Amazon, Ace or Weber customer service.

I have an ET-732 and a second one will be here Wednesday.  I also have a cheapo Walmart $20 one that like Saxart says is accurate.  Now I'll be able to monitor temps in my smoker and both kettles at the same time.

Getting side-tracked with the old school stuff, but here's a good one for $20 and it's a Tel Tru.
High quality therm.
I have one right now monitoring my electric smoker.

Good range for my smoker and built so it can be left in a piece of meat or just spot check.

Some of these thermometers have the target temp of a particular type of meat preprogrammed to safe cooking guidelines set forth by the FDA. That's the problem I ran into today. My thermometer has a target temp for pork preset for 170 degrees. When my pork butt reaches 170 degrees internally, the alarm goes off. I want to be able to set my target temp for 198 degrees. My thermometer won't allow me to do this. I am forced to accept the 170 degrees that the unit was preset for as the target temp.

Are there any thermometers on the market today that will allow me to set my own target temp?

If I can't over ride that on my (en route) Maverick it's going back.
I don't think it's going back, though.

The Maverick ET-732 will allow you to set your desired temp.  You can also set high and low temps on the pit side and be alarmed if your pit temp drops too low or gets too hot.

What about the Maverick ET- 733? Does anyone know about this model? Some of the reviews I read on Amazon talked about the same problem I was having about the inability to set your own desired target temp of the meat.

The 732 is rock solid, there have been complaints about ease of use with the 733. Ramsfan I have 2 years of use on my unit and wouldn't change a thing. I thought about upgrading but came to the conclusion of why!
