I gave up on trying to find an 18" OTG so I started building my own. I bought a new 18" silver using points from a credit card and purchased a new ash bucket and ring on Amazon. I have a spare thermometer and bezel that I may throw onto it. My question is, will the lid holder assembly from a Jumbo Joe work as a lid bale on this? Has anyone tried it?

Thanks in advance.

You should have asked me, I have one I am willing to part with. If anyone else is interested in one pm me. Oh and yes the lid bale will work and yes I have tried it.

I think you could use parts #8, #9 and #10 from the diagram to finish your project.
Sure and make a mini Master Touch. I guess it just depends on whether you want that or something to take along. I wanted something I could carry with one hand, but either is nice to have.

You could add both the SJP lid lock and the lid bale system for a traveling MT.  The lid lock wire would fold over to the front handle.  Decisions, decisions....:)

As luck would have it, one just popped up at DC CL  :D

We are moving cross country and letting go of the weber since it's awkward to pack. We used it once last fall for grilling when we bought it and then it's been waiting around to be used since...  We are asking $60 or first practical offer. And we are more flexible in price if you can get it ASAP! :)

I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!

I had a feeling it would happen. At least I didn't have to clean this one.

Alrighty then! How about you just put on the lid lock wire and install the back support arm from an SJP.

That works....just figured Hatch has the perfect set-up to make the 18 MT using the parts that Dan NY provided.  IMO, the lid bale system is better than the SJP set up.  PLus, the support arm locks into the leg on and SJP.  If installed on a OTS, there is nothing to lock in the support arm.  Matter of preference I guess.....

I looked it up on Weber's schematic which is much clearer. I need 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. Looks like #12, the lid stop bracket is discontinued.

This is the one you should have bought. It was on CL brand new two weeks ago for $75. This had everything for $75: Lid bale, ash bucket, table, cart, wheels, brand new, etc.

This is the original Weber kettle. The most powerful bbq grill in the world and can blow your taste-buds clean off! So, you have to ask yourself one question: "Do you feel hungry? Well, do you punk?"

That would have been much cheaper. I'm still trying to decide if I should go all the way and convert it to a modern day Master-Touch. If I do it, I might as well convert my 22.5" while I'm at it.
