axle caps replacements?
« on: March 03, 2014, 08:21:47 AM »
Anyone know the size of the triangle axle or what size axle caps it needs?

I'd like to replace them with the all metal kind like the old webers had.

Well.....my obsession has branched from just kettles....to parts searching. I've been experimenting with different things. I spend 20 minutes staring at the drawer full of thumbscrews in the fastener aisle at one of the Ace's today.....bought 2 different sizes on purpose.

Yeah, I got my $30 from MY FIRST EVER KETTLE SALE, EVER & went immediately to a hardware store I don't usually frequent looking for hubcaps......

What gets me is that the stores here.....the only 3/8" hubcaps they have are in white. No black or red in that size. Now metal ones....that's another story, theres 3/8 all over the place.

Metal ones seem to be relatively easy to find.....if you can;t locate, I'll send you some.....

I WAS going to say that eReplacementparts sells them for $1.50 for a pack of 3.  I just checked and now they are $5.61 for 3/pk.  WTF!!!!!!  I bought 2 sets a few months ago and I'm really glad I did.  No bueno.

Weber still has them at $1.50 a 3/pk but who knows how long that will last.

If you remove them carefully, you can reuse them.  I just pry them off with a screwdriver.  Sometimes the plastic cap will come off and the washer will be stuck on the axle.  You can get the washer off with some gentle prying with a needlenose.  Once off, use a screwdriver to press it back into the groove of the plastic cap.  Make sure the washer is facing the right way when you so do.

Home Depot has the nickel ones too.

Osh also has these and they have a true "chrome" version but they are $4 or $5 each.

So do I, I think that's why that number stuck in my head  >:(
Funny, I can find the 3/8 in black or white, just not red.

Chad...... pretty sure I have some red already, or can get them if you need......

You actually found black at a hardware, or are they Weber's?

Weber must own the Patent# on black... ??? I can only find white and Red, but the 7/16th is in black.

What he said.  They're cheap enough, I've bought 2 of each and swapped the black cap on the 3/8" retaining washer.
I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!

I know that it is probably heresy, but I like the white ones that I get at Ace. I think they look good with the whitewall wheels. ;D

I agree that the restoration of a vintage kettle would require the OEM look.

I actually bought a pair of black 7/16" push caps and a pair of 3/8" white ones and swapped out the metal retainers.   ;D
