You should have played the lottery that night with that luck.  Looking forward to the pics of the Performer after the cleanup.

Round two started on the inside of the lid and bowl.

I'm pretty sure the previous owner never cleaned this grill.

It had stalagmites hanging from the lid that were about 1/2" in length and the rest was 1/8" thick.

I wished I had taken a picture of the bowl with the grates out.

Build up was very thick, especially under the burner tube. The tube was also full of ash.

I'm not done yet but it is coming along.

Several questions.

Anyone have a different solution for the lid bail roller? I think I remember reading that they all seam to melt.

The lid vent and the sweeper had so much build up under them the they don't seal to well. They seam sprung.

I'm not to worried about the sweep but any ideas for the lid vent? Can the rivet be drilled out and replaced after tweaking the vent?

I wished I would have weighed the lid before I cleaned it. Probably lost a couple of pounds.

Only complaint after cleaning it, it had a perfect fit and was like closing the door on a Lincoln.

A nice thunk when put the lid on. It sounds kind of tinny now.

I guess I will have to build up some more of my own seasoning.

I've personally never had those rollers melt, but I've seen it. I'd avoid banking coals on that end of the grill. As far as the fit on your lid now, it's gonna be like breaking in a new grill now that you cleaned it so good! Start breaking it back in! Nice work.

I flipper her over to take my first look at the sweeper hardware.

All the threads I've read had me wondering if I should even try to take it apart because they always break and parts are not available.

Gave the thumb screw a shot of penetrant and off she came.

Another reason I love Tucson. Rust, what's that?

Might be as far as she gets today.

Got to get ready for the big game and this one won't be ready to cook on.

In the last picture you can see the 18.5" I'm giving to a young guy I work with.

I hope to turn another one into a grillfella.

You're lucky that came apart! Add some anti seize or swap over to an SS bolt to get even more life out of it. I'm really enjoying your restoration.

Don't forget, if that bracket to hold the ash bucket up is worn, or bent and doesn't hold the bucket tight to the bowl, Brian makes some replacement ones!  That bowl turned out really nice.  Its hard work, but that grill is gonna look amazing when you put it back together!

The ash ring had a little slop. I was just planing to bend the bar a little before I reinstall the ring.

Do you think it will stay put?

Or should I get a new one?

If it were me,  I would probably replace it.  Once I get it all back together, I wouldn't want to take it apart again.  At the least, I'd get a new bar just to have an extra one on hand for when that day comes to replace it.  Look forward to the finished pics!

I think I'm finished with the bowl and the sweep.

I'm making my parts list and I will placing some orders this week. Won't need too much.

Tossed the ash ring back on and that bar is a little fatigued, I'm gonna get a new one.

The frame is cleaning up well with just some glass cleaner and some Honda spray polish. No need to repaint.

Progress so far.

Wow, what a beauty!  I still can't believe this was 'an extra'!  Amazing.

I love that two-tone fade on the lid, too.  Incredible.

Isn't that stuff fantastic?  I've been using it for all sorts of stuff for decades.  My old man and I used to buy it by the case and split the cost.  The current stuff is not the same formula as the stuff from the 90's, but its still damn good.

Got a few parts from Weber today.

The hardware for the lid bail was free and I bought the wire baskets.

Picked up the charcoal grate at Lowes the other day.

A question comes to mind.

I have two grill grates that came with this grill and my Mastertouch that won't fold flat when you open the end flaps.

The two newer grates I have will open and the flap lays flat.

Is this one way to tell a newer grate from an older one?
