Jeff-anything in particular you want to see?

Jeff

is the grill assembled or in parts? Do you have any pics of it together?  Its really strange how there seem to be so many different colors (red included) after you cleaned it.  Did you take all the original paint off?

Jeff-the grill is dissambled.  I am working on removing the paint from the lid right now...about half done.  I havent had a lot of time lately.

The top vent...very little porcelain remaining.

And a close up of the lip of the lid.

At first I was concerned that I was removing the original color but the brick red color you can see in some of the photos is beneath the black paint but on top of the pink colored porcelain.  This leads me to believe the grill was painted twice; once in brick red then black.  The brighter red you see in the last photo appears to be underneath the lighter colored porcelain.

Jeff

would you guess this paint is probably something that had been applied after the original Weber paint by whoever owned it at the time?

I assume you are talking about the brighter red...I think this is original paint that is not faded.  It is a thicker layer that does not come off with lacquer thinner while the brick red and black are removed fairly easily with some light scrubbing.

Duke

I can't wait to see what it looks like when all of that old paint is off. It looks like there is a lot of bare metal showing. Do you think someone sanded the whole thing down before they painted it the first time?

G

Not sure but I dont see any evidence of it.  The remaining porcelain is smooth with no scuff marks.  I would think you would see some swirling or scuffed areas.  I rthink its just age and use showing through....

Duke

Do you think it will be mostly red when it's all stripped then? I hope so! When it's finished we need to put it on our front page. 8)

G

The areas shown in the pics is considered complete so I think the remainder will be more of the same...a mix of bare metal and pinkish (maybe more peach colored) porcelain.  Too bad there wasnt more original finish.  Im a little concerned the bottom may be in worse shape than the top since there appeared to be more pits and pock marks in it.  I'll get there eventually.  There is a tiny hole in the bowl directly in the middle of one of the leg sockets.  Not sure how to fix that (or if I need to).

Thanks Buckie, Made me LOL! I need to do another cook on the RK. Dynamics are different... Fall is setting in... Most nights and weekends it is just me and the Bride. Holidays are coming up...

Pics? These were memory cooks, and the only two so far worth noting.
