Where and what kind of turkey should I buy. I want to brine a turkey and smoke it for Thanksgiving. Any suggestions around the Bay Area. TIA.

I have purchased the Trader Joe's Prebrined turkey's the past 2 years with good results.

This is tough because 95% of the turkeys out there are injected with salt water already.  I guess I would look for a local outlet that sells turkeys that are not already injected.  You are probably looking at paying double (or more)  what you would pay for a butterball or honeysuckle though.

There a boutique butcher shop in Berkeley called "the local butcher shop" and ver brugge meats in elmwood really high quality meat there. (Read: $$) give them a call to see if it's what you are looking for.

I think that most, if not all, frozen turkeys are injected. Look for a grocery that carries fresh turkeys. You may have to place an order for one as they don't want to overstock those. They can't hold them like they can with surplus frozen birds. A co-op or organic food mart is more likely to have fresh turkeys than the big chains. Check upscale chains too, like Whole Foods or Trader Joes.
