I picked this weber wok up today and although its never been used before it was obviously left out in the weather and as you can see from the photos is covered in rust.
Just wondering what the best way to get rid of the rust would be? Or is it too far gone?

Cheers

looks like just surface rust from here.  Unless its all the way through the metal, you can bring it back with a wire wheel or sand blasting.

That is a nice score!! Those come up about as often as the 'kabob ring'. I'd try the above mentioned cleaning methods. Can't wait to see pics of it all shiney and new!

Good Luck Hogsy,

I hope you are able to save it. Please tell us the story of where you found it.

You could try a simple electrolysis bath. Are you mechanically handy?
You would need a container large enough to fit it and a car battery charger.
By cleaning it this way, you won't scratch it too much..

I found an awesome product...called Evapo-rust.  It's non toxic and removes rust and it works great.  Soak something overnight and the rust is pretty much gone.  Sometimes you soak it and then sand it a little to loosen it up then soak it again.  I got all the rust off of my old metal wheels.  I don't know if they sell it down under but you might be able to Google it.  I would use the Evapo-rust and a sandblaster and it should work great...

Thanks for the reply's guys
I spoke with a local sandblasting guy this morning and he's going to give it a blast on friday for me but instead of sand blasting he's going to soda blast it.
Apparently the same result but not as abrasive, i'll be sure to post results
I won the wok on ebay, I couldn't believe it, i did my usual daily search of weber products last Sunday and found this item described as weber wok, with brekky plate and The Complete Australian BBQ Kettle Cookbook by Weber-Starting price 99c and it was only 20mins up the road. So 1min before auction end it was still 99c with 1 bid, i placed a  bid in the dying seconds and won it for $1.04.
Best Weber score i've had on ebay in a while and for the price i don't mind spending a bit on the wok restoring it.
But i do need some advice on seasoning it
Cheers

The rust might not actually be that bad. I think the pictures make it look worse. They look like they were well seasoned and then forgotten about.

I can't wait to see it all cleaned up.

Hogsy

I didn't bother getting it soda blasting( too expensive)
And instead bought a disc for my grinder and sanded it back myself

It came up great now i just have to season it
Any tips on seasoning would be great
And any tips on cooking  with the wok too, like how to setup the fire
Cheers

I've switched over to Grapeseed oil for the initial seasoning on my cast iron skillets. It has a real high smoke point and really puts a good carbonized black coating on them quicker than anything else I've used.

Thanks for the bottom pics.  I've got a Uncle who has a small machine shop that does a lot of odd jobs. I wonder if he made some brackets that looked similar to those but hung on the sides of the kettle if it would allow you to use a similar size wok? It would need to hold the wok up high enough to allow the same kind of air flow that yours has around it, then when your done you could just lift the brackets off. It wouldn't be the same rigid solid mount as the original but the weight of the wok and the food would help to hold it in place. You could also use a smaller wok with a straight handle on a 18 and be able to lift and toss it easier, hmmmm.

Golly

i saw this in person yesterday and might i say it came up sweet
i will be ordering a wok and making the brackets
the brackets are quite simple after you see how they are made
