For now I'm just using newspaper and the charcoal chimney, oddly enough it works quite well.

Got the new parts today and installed them, what a difference! I can actually hear the gas now.

Nice!  Glad you are back in business.

...any guess as to the source of the problem?  Are you thinking it was a faulty regulator?

I think so. I was able to take a better look through the burner, it's not pristine but if that's all it takes it's not much. No blockage at all and just minor particles on the tube.
