The family is out of town, I had some pizza dough that needed to be used, beer in the kegerator, and my newly acquired ss performer and kettle pizza ring. All the makings for a good trial run to figure out how they all work. (The kegerator worked as expected.)
I placed a pizza stone wrapped with aluminum foil on the upper part of the kettle pizza and placed another stone to cook the pizza on. I put everything on after the coals were fired and dumped so the stones could heat up gradually trying to keep them from cracking.
My overall take is that you clearly don't have to have the kettle pizza ring to cook some good pizzas but I think it has some benefits in that you can easily make cooking adjustments as it is cooking. It just has a cool or fun factor to it as well.
I actually felt I cooked the top a little fast which is contrary to the norm. I will definitely be doing more pizzas with the kettle pizza. The good thing is that even though is was not as good as I think I could get it, the pizza was still really good with not a lot of effort.
I only got a couple of photos, so here you go....
