B code WSM! Fresh score.

Found this in my driveway today after returning home from Costco where I went to pick up some mixed nuts for smoking.

My wife said her brother dropped it off. It was owned by an extended family members son who didn't want it anymore.  My brother in law knew I would be happy to have it.

I pulled in and saw rust on the normally aluminum parts and  got pretty excited, knowing the early model WSM's had steel doors and legs. Then I saw the B on the lid and bowl vents.  The wood handle is also a  double rivet!  So cool!  It wasn't  what I was expecting to see.

Anyone have any more info on these?
I thought C codes (1981) were first year models.  Are there any B code's we know about?

That is a great gift! I found this on the vwbb website:

The Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker was first introduced for the 1981 model year, so most of the oldest cookers have a C code. A few have a B code, indicating they were manufactured in 1980 in the run-up to the 1981 introduction. There are also a few smokers that have no date code; it's assumed these smokers are the result of manufacturing errors or they may be pre-production models.

Nice score! There are one or two other B's in the club I believe but definitely one of the earliest WSM's. Very cool!

Thanks everyone.  Interesting info Joep and Matt.  Bertl also sent me a link on old WSM's I'll have to give it a read.
I've locked into using my 22" WSM for all my smoking duties recently. I'm going to give the "big boy" a rest for a while and go back to an 18".  I can't wait to fire it up.  It deserves to be used.

Congratulations Dennis! It looks great. I have a B code but without the date code stamped on it. My favorite WSM to smoke meats in is a C code which has the same steel door and legs.
They were built like tanks the first two years and had a shallow water pan before Weber went to a deeper one. Enjoy!
