Temp gauge
« on: March 16, 2023, 06:09:16 PM »
Got a basic 22 and thinking about adding a temp gauge to the lid. Instead of dropping a temp probe in exhaust vent. Any ideas on what I should add?

Tel Tru is a very good brand.  I’d put it beneath the lid vent as close to grate level as possible.

I just bought an adjustable (to calibrate) dial online. I have a bunch of accurate thermometers so I used them to calibrate it.
IIRC it was about 25 bucks.
Its within a degree or 3 so that's plenty accurate IMO

This is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

I do not see the need to drill into the kettle (lid or bowl) for a thermometer.
The first gen M/T and the first two gens of Performer had the lid thermometer through the lid handle.
As a result, the tip of the thermo was very close to the lid vent.
The tip is what reads the actual temperature.

I put a Tel-Tru thermo through the lid vent on an angle and have had no issues.
The reading is usually in the 35-50℉ range higher than the grate temperature.
Got this idea from @MrHoss .

I agree with the no drill.
My kettle had an existing hole for the factory thermometer but it was wildly (38°) off from my old one which was pretty accurate.
This was just sleeved up to the larger thread size with a pipe fitting from HomeDespot & uses the original hole.

Well ya'll talked me into not drilling it. The one short smoke I tried. (thighs) My remote temp probes in vent let me know where I was at.
