Tel-Tru Accuracy?
« on: May 22, 2021, 07:45:00 AM »
Just started a rib roast rotisserie. A Tel-Tru thermometer is mounted in the lid, and I have a Thermoworks temp probe placed near the same location.

The Tel-Tru is reading 275, the Thermoworks says 309.

Who is fibbing, and who is telling the truth? The temp is stabilized now, after 30 minutes cook time.

I would assume a digital thermo is more accurate than a bi-metal analog thermo.

I would assume a digital thermo is more accurate than a bi-metal analog thermo.

That would be true for initial readings, as the analog probe would be much slower to respond to temps and changes. But after total acclimation, I would expect the analog reading to mirror the digital reading, plus/minus a few degrees.

During the last 4 1/2 hours of the burn, the temps were much closer, with a 10 to 12 degree difference. For the first 5 hours, there was a 40 degree difference, not even close.

Saw some very negative reviews on the MEATER. Not that you can believe everything you read...

Yep, gotta get the + model for wifi which works very well. I can monitor the cook from anywhere with my iPhone.  The base model uses Bluetooth only and the range is not that great.  Temps are right in line with my other digital thermometers.

The analog temp gauge is used as a guide for temp trends. If grilling burgers, or steaks, etc., not so interested in spot on accurate numbers.
If doing a long cook, or smoking, then good temp readings are essential.
I have the Thermoworks Smoke, with dual readings for cooking chamber and the meat. It is spot on accurate.
The Tel-Tru is fairly accurate over time, but is slow to respond to temp changes.
