I mounted a Smokey Joe to my custom table for my 26". I plan on using it as a sear station, and with idea of using it more often in mind I have been thinking of getting be a new cooking grate. AmazingRibs.com talked a bit about searing on grillgrates, but he is also always harping on grate marks not being as good as an all around sear.
Has anyone used the GrillGrates on their griddle side for searing? Are they an amazing product?

I have a set for a 22" and for my gasser and I like them although I don't use them much.  They do make a nice looking "Steakhouse" steak or burger for sure.  They require a hotter fire and reduce flame ups when cooking a lot of burgers.

I use grill grates exclusively on my PK grill. I prefer the flat side for a total sear.  I use the other side only for competitions.

I have a set of Grill Grates for a SJ, I picked up last summer on a big score. I've used them a few times on my 22".

You can have them, if you pay shipping.

Cheers

@dwnthehatch how do you like the pk? I thought about getting one, but I always put too much on it for the size. It looks too small for two zone cooking.

I bought it for competing in SCA events. I only cook 2 steaks at a time at most using 2 zones. It has plenty of room though. I also have a raised rack that helps with real estate. People cook whole meals on it. PK owners have a following much like Weber kettles. The thing I hate about it is clean-up. It's a pain to dump the bowl. I much prefer the Weber one touch system.

The pro chef's I've seen grill a steak will sear the entire side, and not just a few "hash marks" on the steak. I think this actually tastes better also.
Normally I will flame sear my steak over the coals, and then pull it to the cool side to finish cooking.
