Special Delivery from Almaty
« on: April 14, 2021, 12:33:52 AM »
I live in Atyrau, Kazakhstan and work for an oil company .  It is a pretty small city in a developing country.  As such, a lot of products are not available.  Charcoal briquettes is one such product.  The lump charcoal I can get here is good, but I like briquettes for some cooks.

Anyway, a Kazakh friend and coworker asked me to write letters of recommendation for grad schools in the USA.  I was happy to, and he got into Columbia!

After that, I felt I could ask him for a favor.  I sent him out looking for Weber briquettes in the city of Almaty (where he is working because of covid).  He found them and and arranged shipping to me.  Altogether i paid about 90,000 kzt (~$207) for 64 kg.  Not bad considering my location.

I haven’t heard of anyone getting them in the US for over a year since they discontinued them.  That’s a really good find. Wish Weber would start manufacturing them again.

I think they continue to sell them in Europe.  These ones are made in Germany.  I will see how they compare to the USA ones.

Yes here in the Netherlands they are available. Only the long lasting briquettes are discontinued

NL_Weber_fan,
Wow, you are a long ways from home and yet you procured charcoal briquettes.  Very impressive.  I have worked with Kazakhstan over the years and I find their meat product pretty good.  Since you're there and grillin', what are some of your favorite meat cuts and spices to use in Kazak?
Keep on smokin'  the best grills ever.

The meat is good.  They can also get very good beef from Miratorg in Russia.  I can get local meat for very cheap.  There is even a local butcher that can get good pork.  I find the local traditional cooking pretty bland but there are a lot of good local restaurants that have cuisine from all over the works.  The Georgian restaurants are awesome with meat skewers cooked over charcoal.
