True grey.  One way to tell is a faded black kettle will not have a shine or reflective quality to it.  The kettle above has a reflection of the sky, clouds and a house.

Thanks! Surprisingly I  was able to secure her as she was on MP for 4 hours when I first seen her. Don't see many of these up for sale.

Another way (besides the absence of shine/sheen) to tell a true gray from a faded black is the bowl in the faded black will still be partially (if not completely) black.  There will be a clear difference in color between the bowl and lid.
