I did some hot wings yesterday on my new grill and they turned out great.

Today I have the heat plate on for some low and slow rib cooking but I really need a thermometer. I really have the skills to go by feel. Any recommendation for a good but not too expensive thermometer

well I have ordered one of these.

I could also do with one to monitor the grill temp and a remote monitor would be very useful but do I really need to spend another 100 bucks to get something useful

I use an analog (dial) one.
But for me, half the fun is taking a peek to see how it is going and what it looks like.  I figure, the heat loss is really no big deal, it just takes a bit longer.  If I'm in a big hurry, I just don't cook over charcoal in the first place.

I usually don't drink while cooking, but when I do, more beer for me.

Hal

I guess there is a lot to be said for that. Also as I use the grill more I will get to know what to do more instinctively

Nothing better to help your grilling than a good thermometer.
It's pretty hard to guess based on appearance or feel what the internal temperature of a particular cut of meat.

The Thermoworks Pop that you ordered is a great first step.
The Chef Alarm and the DOT from Thermoworks are relatively inexpensive leave-in thermometers. They are accurate and well built, but do not have any remote monitoring capabilities. They also utilize the same  Pro-Series probes that are used with their Smoke and Signals products, which is great if you ever want to upgrade.

With either of these products you will need an air temp probe if you want to monitor your pit temp.

Two less expensive but very popular brands are Maverick and ThermoPro. Many people have great success with them and they would be worth considering.

Good luck with your search!

I use a lavatools javelin.   Best thermo I've used.  Usually bought the Weber branded instant read.  Those usually lasted a year.  This one is about $25 but worth every penny imho.

+1. Mine has lasted many years now and have had no issues at all. I've also supplied all the cafeteria workers with one at our local high school. They love them.

 @Philipb ;

You.ve gotten a good start bying the Thermoworks Dot.  When and if you decide you want to do long and slow cooks you may decide that you want a proper remote thermometer that you can leave in the food. There are many options out there.

Right now, you are learning a lot... how the grill performs.... how the food reacts.   Enjoy the journey, don't overthink the process.

Soon you will discover what you want/need. Right now, you are on a great start to this wonderful journey.
