Finally a Fireplace

It arrived yesterday afternoon, and I put it together today.  Can't wait to fire it up this weekend (it has been waiting to fulfill its purpose since 1994!) . Love the look of it!

   Don't know if those are the bamboo handles save them and put some plastic handles on. As far as the bottom goes I went in another direction and ordered a 22" WSM charcoal ring from Cajun Bandit and went with two taco handles.

I'd put sand in the bottom for heat protection. Weber recommends it.

How much sand do you put in it? I remembered that it was in manual to put sand in to protect it. Filled it up with sand to point I thought would provide protection. Later found manual and it said something like 2 or 5 pounds of sand. I had to laugh because I had at least 40 pounds in it

The grate and the ring keep the wood away from the Fire pit to avoid the same that happens when charcoal is right up on the kettle.

My experience burning fires in various fire pits is the hot coals sift through the grate and you end up with the entire bottom being full of hot coals so not sure a grate would work for any substantial fire.

So, I got some sand and put it in the bottom (Weber suggests 2 lbs, not sure how much I put in...the fireplace doesn't come with a grate, so I took one out of my current beater Weber kettle firepit, and put it in the fireplace.  First fire tonight when the lovely wife and daughter get home.  Planning on having an old fashioned while the kids roast a few marshmallows.
