The instructions say not to do any seasoning on my new made in China Gourmet Griddle. Is it not just cast iron? I always season my cast iron pans with canola oil, then bake them in the oven to create a natural "non-stick" finish. Can we do this with the new griddle? Why or why not?

Might return this to Weber, as I think using a good Made In America cast iron skillet would be just as good, maybe even better.

Any thoughts?

It is most probably enameled. That's why no seasoning...

And BTW, made in China doesn't say that it's bad... I have now 15 or 16 different CI pans, DOs and plates and they are actually all made in China.  They are still doing their job

I will never knowingly purchase cast iron made in China. They make great electronics and other stuff but for cast iron and carbon steel, our American made is better imo.

And I definitely don't care for porcelain enameled cast iron for a griddle no matter where it's made.

Vwengguy, is your rectangular Weber griddle porcelain coated?  It didn't look like it from the pictures.

I take that back. I did buy and would buy again a made in China carbon steel wok.

I worded my post poorly. I will clarify. I'm brand loyal just like my Webers. I only buy brand new lodge cast iron. It's affordable, they have excellent customer service, and I'm not into cleaning or restoring someone else's old iron. It's also made in USA with the exception of their porcelain cookware I believe. I know old pieces can be restored but unlike a porcelain coated Weber, cast iron is porous. For this reason I opt for new.

Well, the finish on the Weber Gourmet Griddle is quite rough. All of my USA made cast iron frying pans have a smooth finish.

Is this an indication of quality in the manufacturing process? If my wife finds out it's from China, she will insist on sending it back!

There's really nothing wrong with Chinese stuff. Porcelain enameled CI shouldn't be however rough. If it's the case, you should indeed send it back.

Here in Europe I can't unfortunately say that LODGE is affordable ️ that's why I'm buying stuff which I simply can pay. However, I do not regret what I buy

I'm not judging. If I lived in Europe, I would probably do the same. I've had foreign made cast iron and it's fine. I just like the lodge a little better.

Yeah, you're right. US made CI is here simply so expensive that you are looking for alternatives. Made in CN is one of them
