Smoker Attachment for the Kettle

This ones been on my mind for a while
Photo taken from a 1977 weber recipe book
Does anyone own one or know how it works?
 
I'm only 2 or 3 kettles away from being that creepy guy down the street with all the Webers

I believe it works as a baffle that sits right where the top grate does and then you set your grate on it. It has a giant pan like a pizza pan that sets in it. It basically offsets the food. I wish I had one because it will be a lot of work to make.
