I know the instructions say to hand wash it but Why can't you put it in the dishwasher?

Hi. Are you referring to the cast iron insert that's part of the GBS system grate?

If so, you never want to put cast iron in a dishwasher. Much of the seasoning (oil) will be removed. Light soap in the sink is OK but all cast iron needs (or, should get ... ) is a scrub and a paper towel and some heat. Without oil it rusts.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Cast iron takes special care, it needs to have what is referred to as seasoning. If you clean that off the item will rust very badly.

What's the temp of the water in a dishwasher, now that temp being sprayed on that sear grate will do more damage than you hand washing. If you're hand washing then you're gonna hand dry then oil it immediately. Now  if you're gonna stand by the dishwasher and wait for it to finish so you can oil it give it a shot and let us know after a year.
