Not sure why... (another red)
« on: February 03, 2018, 08:01:22 AM »
I saw an ad for a red OTS that I didn't need. I picked it up today for some reason. It's an 86 and is in remarkable good condition. Small chip at one of the leg sockets and a little rim rash but looks clean otherwise. I'll clean it up and situate the legs once it get a warmer around here.

Congrats. Grate score. If this was the one in Baltimore, @namtrag would love to get his first red.

I need to see how attached I feel to this grill after the cleanup.  It's remarkably nice for its age.  There's an interesting black speckle effect to the porcelain that I sort of like.  If I decide that I can move it after it's all cleaned up, @namtrag will get first dibs.

Did a quick wipe down since it's at least sunny out. Man, this is going to be pretty with some new lumber. There's some orange peel and not sure whether the fidelity of picture will translate the speckled effect.

Looks like a keeper to me
Seeking a Black Sequoia I know I know, I'd settle for just the tabbed no leg grill

I don't know whether it's that I'm getting cabin fever from a long winter or this grill has a spell on me. I spent an hour or so this morning beginning the process of restoring the legs and triangle of this red. I don't normally do this because I just cook.  Not sure how far I'll go with it, but phase 1 came out decent but not great. I'll probably get some metal polish for the legs. I used 3 grades of steel wool and some beekeepers friend to get them to this point. I'll try a wheel on the triangle to see how that does. I'll decide then how far I'll go with the legs.

It does look like I was able to get a better picture capturing the speckled effect on the porcelain I tried to explain before. I haven't noticed speckles to this degree on a colored kettle before. It intrigues me.  Not that I don't get that it's just how they lay the porcelain, but that it's different.
