How did it turn out? I've never spun a ham.

What makes it different from just smoking it?

Yeah I considered spinning a ham today, but decided just to do light smoke indirect while sitting in a foil pan. I just didn’t feel like getting my spinner out.

for me it's the caramelized crust that it produces , plus for me there's something primal about it all .first time i tried it wth  no lid (.attatched the brackets to the handles )took a long time  ( about 4 hours ) but sure was beautiful to watch ,,mezmerizing , in full hd too ! first time with my diy ring took a little over 2 hours at  - 25 and high winds -42 windchill ouch  give it a try dude i'm sure you'll love it .

You've intrigued me. I will definitely spin my next ham. One question though. Spiral cut or no?

i find the spiral cuts are a little dryer but that was in a oven , never tried one on a grill .

I spun a spiral this year.  I had to put lots of skewers in the meat to keep it together...it held until the end and then fell into my drip pan.  LOL  Picked it up an put on a plate and everyone said was the best ham ever. :)

I'd like some info on your DIY ring.
I was thinking of making my own because I have an older (probably got it 10-15 years ago) NIB rotisserie for a gas grill (just a Thermos brand).  Instead of keeping an eye out for a deal on a Weber setup, I was thinking about making a ring, or three, for it.

I'd start with one for the 22, but figured I'd consider one for the 18 & later for a 26 (whenever I eventually run across a cheap one).

for me it's the caramelized crust that it produces , plus for me there's something primal about it all .first time i tried it wth  no lid (.attatched the brackets to the handles )took a long time  ( about 4 hours ) but sure was beautiful to watch ,,mezmerizing , in full hd too ! first time with my diy ring took a little over 2 hours at  - 25 and high winds -42 windchill ouch  give it a try dude i'm sure you'll love it .

Hal

hey hal , my ring was a last minute hack job i thru together for christmas at the last minute (damm near froze my fingers off lol ) . lots of info on this site or on google which is were i got the idea . if your get lucky you can find a drum that's the right width , mine wasn't . had to cut to fit . if you have to cut to fit the top ring has to be a little longer than the sides .i didn't weld anything just screws for now . if you want i can take some pictures or give you info if you want . when the weather gets nicer i'm going to finish it off with welds . i made mine tall so it can double as a smoker if needed . note , wear hearing protection very loud ! , and it would be easyer having someone  hold the drum as u cut as they vibrate like crazy . try find food grade , i didn't but i did a 2 hour wood burn in it before i used it . hope this helps
