Amount of Charcoal used in the 22 and 26 kettle.

Is there a difference in the amount of charcoal used when using a 22 inch and a 26 inch kettle?  :o

Yes.  Here is from my 80's Weber owner manual with the recommended charcoal usage. The 22" uses 50 briquettes and the 26" uses 60 briquettes.

I did my Thanksgiving cook on a vintage 26er. I used Marty's bigger better basket filled with one full chimney of Weber charcoal and about 8 unlit briquettes. I had a pan down below on the charcoal grate with the vegetables and 3 quarts of fluids for gravy plus a 22-pound bird spatchcocked above it. I lit the grill about 30 minutes prior to my cook. After a three-hour cook I still had probably 2 hours worth of charcoal left all vents wide open and a grate temperature on the opposite side from the basket of about 375.

It really doesn't use much more coals if any at all.  I actually think my 26er gets hotter with one chimney of coals than my 22's do.  It might have something with the amount of air in the kettle to feed the coals.

Thank you, for all the responses. I wasnt putting enough coals in my 26er. I am cooking a meatloaf tonight using an indirect method. I got the recipe from the Weber website.

Cool chart. It looks like the 20% extra charcoal goes down to 12.5% extra to maintain the temp. I haven't don't the math but it seems like you get more filling area per briq in the 26 vs the 22

i might be asking a silly question. When one adds charcoals at the hour mark are these lit coals or unlit coals?

Jim, that is great thanks! My dad used to do turkeys on 22's at our cabin's association and had a formula similar to that to cook them. I believe he added a few more per hour. Not sure if it was for a higher temp or due to the elevation.

That's a handy little chart. I never actually count. Is that roughly the same quantity for the snake or minion method on stated kettle sizes?

Honestly I treat it exactly that same as a 22" for grilling. To me the added benefit is that it can hold even more charcoal for low and slow. The size to me does not matter as much as every charcoal is its own unit of heat and once the desired temperature is reached its a matter of mantening it....if necessary.
