I have been coaching middle school football for 5 years now. During those seasons, I met a family who has become very close friends with my family. Their middle son, who played for me, just turned 15. He loves grilling, and does all the grilling for his family, but he is stuck using a 15 year old generic gasser. I felt like I had to do something.
I decided to buy the young man his first Weber kettle. Nothing special about it, except that it is his first. It is a 2013 AT 22" Original Kettle that I scored off CL for $30. It has a few rust marks, but I think she will cook just fine. It also came with a fancy grate - ya know, the kind the flips up and has the removable center circle. (I just you pros out there know what kind it is, I am not that knowledgeable with the accessories yet). However, I am keeping that grate for me and giving him the standard one that came with my 22. The CL ad said a chimney was also included. Sweet! However, it turned out to be some knock off chimney that I will replace for him.
Last night, at football, I saw him and showed him a picture of his birthday present. He couldnt stop smiling. He said he was just at a local BBQ restaurant and decided to ask his mom to buy a smoker. He also said "I want to cook things slow." I said, "You are perfect Weber material, and don't buy the smoker!" Then, he asked me to teach him how I make pulled pork!
I briefed him on the kettle's capabilities and his excitement grew. In the next couple weeks, my family will be delivering the kettle, a Weber chimney, a bag of Stubbs briqs, and having a cookout while I teach him the basics. Chicken leg quarters, broccoli, and corn on the cob is on the menu. I will keep you all posted if you are interested. I also suggested he join us here at WKC.
