1buckie, your photos and experience are the very reason I just signed up for WKC.  Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go change my pants and wash my hands.  I can't handle too much kettle porn in one sitting.

 Guess what I'm trying to say is your (& each person's) experience is just as valid as mine or anyone else's..... ;D

Great stuff here!  Tri tip is not common in my area. I've only done one so far but really liked it.

@1buckie,

Like you I've cooked many tri tips in my lifetime. I usually cook them like you (quick sear, then indirect low to about medium/rare or medium ). A few times recently I have also tried reverse searing them with great results. I have to say though...I have never smoked or wok-fried one. Thanks for the inspiration. I also need to try beans down by the coals.

....ok, lesse......maybe something will post up here.................

Here's where we left off....

Charcoal setup.........
Otta call these things 'Smoke Rings", but I think that name's already been co-opted !!

Lump chips for "burn insurance"............

Startup......

Aways in, things weren't moving quite smoothly & all clean-burn-like, so I forwarded some coals to get things moving along....

Bean pan in @ 2-1/2 hours.....

Here's what the burn looked like about 1/2way around....

Beans in jail......

Thinking the brisket would come around to done maybe somewhere near the tip,

I separated the coal line at the end......Silly me....brisket takes longer, even if it's smaller, I guess
I've always wanted to do these side-by-side, so this is it......

Oak & Apple make  for a nice color...

Fired up Lulu for some taters.....

Tip was well done way ahead of point.....

Pull apart.....

Tri tip....just like brisket is supposed to do...........

Please note: There is no knife in this photo, it's not needed...

After a short nap, the brisket is done......

I like the point....it's yummy !!!

for what it takes to get where I need to go, the tri=tip is an easier cook, though.... :D

Thanks fer Lookin' !!!

Oh, and the beans did get out of jail.....

 Did some burnt ends with the  brisket & tri-tip also, leftover from Bob's cookup the other day.....

Fired up his second cousin, Mae Belle for the job...
( sportin' a borrowed red hat for the occasion)

Cleared a little rust the cast iron picked up when the carport leaked this winter, re-seasoned &
dumped the chunks.....

Hour @ 325 ~~~>

Cooked down ~~>

I really like the cooks, as usual. But is the table saw part of the cooking process?

@Jon

Guess you could say yes.....cutting wood chunks....two pecan trees in the yard & numerous friends w/ oak, apple, etc.
There's always wood needs cuttin'.............
