I'm a believer of.. if it's Weber parts you have permission to customize to your needs. Like custom cars, it reflects your needs and personality.
I think that Non Weber parts need to be used with care as to not take away from the basic function of the grill or due un-restorable damage to a grill.
Things that don't count as mutt maker items are.. Rotisserie, SnS's, CI Grates or anything that is not permanent or causes damage.

That being said.. here is a photo of my baby. 2015.. what did I change ? And is it now a Mutt?

I like your description. I'm not a purist but I prefer an oem look, fit, and finish.

like everyone else said case by case. my kraft is 100 % original but that's because I got it new. my jack Daniels has had 3 different bowls one was just bad one from dazzo and one from a Clamato logo. I out the Clamato logo lid on my 18 jumbo joe tuck n go premium. I chopped up a performer to use the brackets and lid bail on my legless avocado. I look for other cheap kettles to rob for parts. as long as it's oem it's fair game on my kettles.

Hacker

If they clean up decently they stay somewhat original and I try to stay true to that

Wheels, tri/axels, legs and ash sweeps swapped with nicer ones for RRR's

Looking for the old style anythings are a waste of time for what I'm doing
I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!
