And I do think that you ended up with the right configuration with the bolts. Whatever is inside the kettle will degrade from cooking, and with the nuts inside you can just grab them with pliers.
Bolt heads inside would be tougher if you needed to remove them - pliers slip off, screwdriver won't catch. Engage Dremel and risk the porcelain.
