Hey guys new to the club. Located in Alabama.  Picked up a Kraft Cheese logo kettle for $20.  Both grates are pretty rusted and it doesn't look like it's been used in a couple years, judging by the sap on the lid.  Going to clean up and use this as a partner to my G2 Performer.

The ash sweep was very stiff and rusty so I got it removed and it is soaking in Evapo-Rust to clean them up for painting.  I was planning on using a high temperature paint unless someone has a better idea.  Same with the ash bucket handle.

Any way to fix the rust damage around the lid handle welds and let sockets?

Any other tips for a rookie. I couldn't resist and have already had the razor blade scraper on it.

Welcome to the club! You'll have a lot of fun and learn a ton. As for tips...

1. DO NOT PAINT THE SWEEP! No matter what you pain it with it's not good. Leave it alone once you clean it.

2. Repairing the chipped paint (On the outside only) you can if you are lucky use some high temp paint. Just understand it will  eventually burn off over time.  You can also heat up the grill and put vegetable oil on the spots that are washed once cleaned.

3. You can clean the grill graates and reseason them and they will be fine.

Have fun and nice looking grill.

Wife said "No more GRILLS in this house!" So I bought a 2nd house!

Thanks.  I could not find anything dealing with rust on the sweeps.  Other than replacing them of course.

That grill is cheesy

Ya..Don't paint anything inside the grill. Heat + paint = toxins.

New sweeps are pretty cheap on Amazon and Ebay.  Much better way to go than painting.

First off. Kraft is not friggin cheese. It is an abomination.  Otherwise that is a very nice grill. You've got some very good advice so far. I hope you enjoy the grill for many many years.
