Hello 🏽

I have recently bought a Weber MasterTouch and I was wondering if there's a benefit in using ceramic briquettes together with charcoal, particularly when doing slow roasts?

Probably not. If there was, I'm sure it would have been tried by now. Now having said that, here's an interesting thread;http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/grilling-bbqing/monday-morning-lamb-shoulder/

Hello TheTaf,
Yes I have used the old CharmGlow Charm-Roks for years in my Master Touch. I think they stabilize the temp and help a lot.
The set up I use has the bricks only in the middle and nothing under the baskets.
I think this helps with blocking and then moving the air to the bottoms of the baskets.
They also get very hot and retain the heat very well. Kind of BGE style.

When I do a T-Bone on the sear grate I just dump the coals on top of the roks and they are self cleaning and white when I'm done.

Hope this helps you.

Hey vwengguy!

Thanks for your input. I'll try a similar setup this weekend.

Why not just use a brick? I've done it and it seems to have worked for me. I was thinking it would absorb heat and save me coal I could reuse.

I don't have a brick hanging around, but I do have 75-80 of these charm-rok gas grill blocks. :-)

Wow.  Never thought of this.  Can't imagine how well this might work for slow and low cooks.  Drippings sizzling off of the rocks!!!!  I like it.

Any idea where we can get the rocks ?

vwengguy

I did a quick check and I see amazon has the from $15- $45 .

Not sure where you are but you can also check any larger gas grill seller shop. They should also have them.

This is photos of what I found in amazon.

I did see Ducane brand but these were made to sit flat or in a holder rack. I don't think I would get these because they look like they don't have enough mass for what we do with them.

You want to look for something that is about as thick as a charcoal brick !

Hope this helps!

Also check out old gasser's being thrown out at the curb !!

Lava rocks would probably do the same thing.

Been there tried that... not the same.
They don't have the same heat holding mass as ceramic bricks.
Same reason they don't make BGE's out of lava rock. It just won't hold the heat, and that's the idea here. Lava rock also falls apart pretty fast. My ceramic bricks are 40+ years old and still doing good.

D@mn, I tossed the ceramic briquettes when tossed out my last gasser and now there's a real use for them.

I can see them now, spread around the Vortex, wing fat dripping and sizzling on them . . . .
