Turns out she lives about 20 minutes from me. She had received numerous offers from around the country, one as far as Australia. She did not want to deal with shipping or eBay. She is a "picker" hitting estate and garage sales. She purchased the kettle and accessories at an estate sale for $30. For unknown reasons, it sat in the original owners garage, put together with the cover on for over 40 years.
What the pictures did not show is that the lid had either been crushed or been dropped directly on the handle. The handle was bent and the lid top was pushed in about 1 inch. It was so bad the lid vent had an almost 1/4" gap between it and the pushed in side of lid (see photo below). It was much worse than it looks in the picture. There were several areas of missing porcelain and tiny spider cracking of the porcelain around the handle welds.
Once I arrived home, I was able to pop the lid and handle back out with one whack from a rubber mallet. For the next 5 minutes though, I heard the sickening sound of porcelain popping and cracking. It now has more missing porcelain both on the inside and outside around the handle welds. With all the visible spider cracking of the porcelain, I knew the there was a risk of loosing porcelain. Disappointing side affect but I just could not live with that dented lid. Since I probably will never cook on it, I will have a specialty paint shop match the yellow porcelain and touch up all the bare metal spots.
