Is there a reason why you use the smaller one? Do you get better results?

Youtube is your friend.  Search "Kettle Snake Method".  It's amazing the things you can do on these grills.

smaller cooks. if I cook for just me and the wife i don't need so much space to cook on.

careful buddy , you already need a 18 for smaller cooks . then you'll need a red head , then you'll want a first gen performer . before you know it your truck will be in the driveway cus kettles have taken over the garage . be wary of weberitus were all enablers here .

I was thinking of getting a WSM and convert it to a mini smoker. Saw a couple YouTube videos on that :)

Congratulations!
With the upgrade to the metal table, a gen 2 performer is quite possibly the best grilling machine ever made.
Expect till you start looking at some vintage yellow that changes color when you cook on it...
Or a super rare custom...

You come thinking "These guys are great!" BUT, in actuality they're all a bunch of enablers, pretty soon your yard looks like this!!... LOL   But I can't remember when I've had more fun with a hobby or been involved with a better online forum!!
