The Brave (special thanks to HeyJude)
« on: April 07, 2013, 06:09:28 PM »
I spent last week in Alabama and returned this weekend to find a box in the garage.  Inside was a this brown 18 that HeyJude picked up for me several weeks ago.  It was pricey but its in great condition.  It didnt take much to clean it up for a photoshoot.  A special thanks to Jude for grabbing this for me....much appreciated.

Those look stupendous !!!

What did you do to get the triangles looking so good.....even the best ones I have are rusted?

Well, that's what I just did for my friends kettle, the copper one with the beef rib handle, but G's look almost like they're cleaned to that finish, not painted........?

Buckie, the answer lies in the condition of the triangle.  The triangle on this Brave was in near new condition.  All I had to do was hit it with a flat screwdriver where there were some rust deposits, then a good steel wool scrub.  You can see rust on the triangle of the other Brave (left side).  Same process was applied here but there was significantly more rust on this one especially in the corners where the wires come together.  If there is some chrome left on the triangle, you can clean it up using this process.  If its severely rusted, I think you are out of luck.  Maybe others have another opinion.

Thanks, I just used fancy silver spray paint & it looks decent, not like the nickel or chrome plated original, but decent............didn't want to do that on a rare / looker type one, but for the fixer-uppers ceramic heat paint is reasonable !!!

As far as a badly rusted one, you just go as far as you can go & call it good?
Any preservative, or?

I have a few newer kettles that are coated / painted black triangles.....any thoughts / comments there?

On the new grills they aren't even chroming them anymore. They use an aluminum colored spray paint that liiks pretty close, but it's not chrome. I have painted a couple really rusty triangles with it and it looks pretty good.

It was my pleasure. Knowing that the grill went to a great home. These Webers are slowly disapearing from the planet. So getting it to a safe home is great.
That little bit of clean up and polish really makes it shine like new.

As for triangle clean up, its a matter of just how lucky you get. Few come out perfect, most leave some rust behind. I use a wire wheel on the really bad ones. It helps, but its near impossible to get it all off.  8)
