did any of the 90s 18.5s have bolt on legs? like a lock screw to hold the legs? I'm gonna get a jack daniels logoed 18.5. my buddy who lives in hayward is gonna pick it up for me but he drives a Mustang, not a very large trunk. so I asked the seller if he could take the legs out so it would fit easy. he said sure has to unscrew the legs? if it's not a weber I'm not gonna worry to much I'll just to a shorty mod. but just curious if they did back then. I think it's 90s cuz it has wooden handles

I don't believe the thumbscrews were available that late.

I'm with darko, what may have happened is THE owner or previous owner may have run a screw into the legs to keep the from falling out...
CGA,GGA, jumbo joe, 3-18" kettles,22" blue,green,yellow and 2 reds, 1-22" lid mod for pizza, a genesis silver,2 Red SS Performers,2 26ers,1 red, 1 chief and a Ranch Kettle.

Yes sir. Sounds like a homemade job. No biggie though. You can possibly knock off a couple bucks. There's a lot of kettles floating around here with self tappers or whatever in the legs!! Nice looking Jack.

Hell, I used self tappers in my first kettle to stop the legs from falling out.

@darko @varekai @travis well it's only 20 bucks, soooo id call it a good deal either way. real weber or knock off. I'll make use of it one way or another. fingers crossed it's real ha ha

for the ideas I have about building a pallet grilling table that will accommodate a 22 on one side and a 18 on the other with folding ends.... it will make me a very happy panda ( kudos if you get the panda reference)

I'm a bit foggy(damn beer) on the history when it comes to exact dates, but I think that the thumbscrews disappeared around 1969.

+1

Thumbscrews leg sockets on the MLH kettles from 1956 to 1963 and MBH kettles from 1964 to 1968. MBH kettles from 1969 on got the friction leg socket without thumbscrews.  This is all on the Age Guide at the top.

yea when I googled it I only found pictures of one's with the all steel handles also only 2 handles 1 on top one in front.

My guess is that the owner doesn't know his screws from his bootlaces!

It probably doesn't have any thumbscrews, he's probably never taken it apart and is not aware that the legs aren't actually screwed on.
