If you are actually looking to drill into the WSM lid, just make sure to put some masking/painters tape over where you want to grill then slowly start. This should prevent chipping.

Actually, I found that if you start slow there isn't much chipping at all even without the tape. Mind you, I've only done it once.

@darko agreed. I've installed grate level temps on my three kettles. Key is the same for any job you do. Good tools and proper techniques and you'll get good results

Cheers again everyone, im going to grab a Maverick HD-377 ( or is it HD-733)
Its got 2 probes one for the meat and one that sticks on the grill. Its about $90 aus
